basketball is my favorite sport but I've forced myself to distance from the program over the last few years. It's became too hard to watch, and to be continually disappointed. I consider myself very basketball knowledgeable, but not an expert. That said, I never saw the potential from Doherty to move the program forward. He hasn't brought one guy here who can consistantly score the ball, or create his own shot. He's never finished better than .500 in C-USA, and outside of Memphis, C-USA is a very average to bad basketball conference.

I watched FM Marcus (ranked #12 in the nation) play Montrose Christain (#4) last night on ESPN and it just reminds me how much talent is in the DFW area. Marcus' two best players are committed to Okie St. Freaking Okie St! We are going to the Big East. We have great facilities. In the center of a great city. About to play in a conference with games on nationally almost everyday. Our conference tourney is played in NYC in the most famous arena in the world. How can you not sell that to recruits? We need someone who can, and someone who can coach the guys once they get here.

Don't get me wrong. I agree it was a "bad" loss. I am just not ready to completely throw the coach under the bus for this one. I don't over react.

We've been doing a very good job recruiting to CUSA. Pretty sure we'll recruit to the Big East too. CUSA is considered a high mid league. Nobody in CUSA is allowed in mid-major polls, so calling it a average to bad hoops conference flies in the face of how its actually regarded. I get all the stuff you say about Doh though, he just doesn't get the best out of his players/teams. We have far better talent than the result this year, experience be damned

Joe Lunardi has 3 CUSA schools in his bracket including Memphis, Marshall, and Southern Miss. CUSA is trending up! The main reason I dislike CUSA hoops is that it is the toughest mid-major league to get a bid from. CUSA is consistently a top 10 basketball league and has only had 1 season of multiple bids in the current alignment.

hoopmanx,
I realize we have landed a few more higher ranked recruits in the last couple of years but it certainly hasn't resulted in wins yet. I know I don't have to tell you but freshman contribute immediately at all levels of college hoops these days, and help their teams win. It just frustrates the hell outta me that every year we lose to a Jackson St or South Carlonia Upstate type school early on (sometimes two), begin C-USA play poorly then get on a little roll at the end of year by beating bad Tulane or Rice teams to get close to .500 and lose in the first round of the C-USA tourney. It's the same thing every season under Doherty.

There is no overreaction, here are the facts-
Last conference Championship was '93
Last NCAA Tournament Appearance '93
Last NCAA Tournament Win '88
Last NCAA sweet 16 '67

Program has been non competitive in how long? You can fill in the blank based on your expectations but winning conference and making the tournament should be in reach every year with this program and our resources. Losing to a 1-9 Jackson State team in our hometown is unacceptable.

High level view --I agree with the potential of hoops vs fball. I like them both, hoops is much easier.

Just look at VCU, Butler, Wright State, George Mason. There is no reason why we can't be one of them at some point.

It is VERY sad we haven't sniffed the NCAA since the 90's. I don't really care about Sagrin ratings, conference rankings, what haveyou. The WAC was alot more competive and fun. The BE is going to be a bear.

Cox, please stop worrying about the Big East, we aren't there yet and nobody is paying attention, other than Dan Wolken who's feelings are hurt that his Memphis is not in the BE (as they probably should be just based on hoops).

Memphis needs to drop football or at least move to FCS and that way the Big East can add them to the roster of basketball schools lol!

that's a farce and a joke. We were 8-8 last year in conference and were in 3rd or 4th place about half the conference season. Memphis football hasn't won a conference game in two years

Cool, we all get it, and hope there is change. Not trying to call anyone out, but leave the outrage for those of us who attend, watch, or listen to all the games. Beyond that, the talent level isn't the issue, and I'm so very tired of people spouting off on the Big East like that's this year. Our 6 frosh will be juniors then, and we'll have two additional recruiting classes under our belt

Absolutely agree. I like Doh, but he has players now, so no excuses for him. We need to start the process now. SO needs to focus on who is out there and develop a plan.

Also, this kind of loss will kill attendance. Who wants to go through the grinder?

I hear you. Let's just say I have some concerns about the Big East and they be spilling out in my comments. I would love to just say "SMU is in so FU", but I just don't believe it's nearly that simple. You’re right though, let’s not borrow trouble.

Its two years away. In that stretch, we'll roughly have 7 new players or so. Its not worth worrying about right now. Getting our cupboard in order is first order of business.
