Re: Preview before Conference PlayI guess our bowl game seasons are the equivalent to the CIT season last year. I think people would be happy to repeat that.
And we got destroyed by AtM and beat TCU this year, both "bcs" teams. Both ranked at the time.
Re: Preview before Conference PlayBball results have been pathetic. Hmanx- why not compare 'in conference' results between the fball team and the bball team. Seems to me that CUSA is about as good in one of those sports as the other. FBall has tied and also challenged for conference championships. How close has bball come to winning the conference? After six years it can be all on the players or lack there of.
Hope that a coaching change is made at the end of the year. GO PONIES!!!
Re: Preview before Conference Play
TCU wasn't BCS, and A&M blew us up
Re: Preview before Conference Play
CUSA football isn't on the same planet as CUSA hoops. Look at the number of wins CUSA hoops programs have vs. power conferences as opposed to football. Again, I'm all for firing Doherty, I just think the guys who kill hoops and the relative improvement, but praise football are in lala land. Hell, I work at the greatest football-based company in the world, and the football folks all feel the same way. Our bowl bids, based on the number of teams invited to bowls, vs the number who play, is worse percentage-wise than the CIT. In short, as bad as the CIT is, its roughly equivalent to a better bowl game than we've been invited. Here's the deal, neither revenue deserves an ounce of praise. I'm not sandbagging fball, I'm destroying them both. Doh will leave this program in very good shape w/regards to personnel.
Re: Preview before Conference Play
I will agree that I'm not satisfied with where we are with football, but we have made significant and tangible progress. That progress is less apparent to me in basketball. If you think that it wasn't our football program that gave us the argument to make it to the Big East then you are just deluding yourself. Let's give credit where credit is due. It's amazing to me you don't think that deserves an ounce of praise. Making it to one CIT tournament during his tenure here is hardly comparable. Before you dismiss the quality of the CUSA football conference, then you must not have watched many games this year. Both Houston and USM played extremely well, for instance. Houston just took a B10 team to the cleaners in their bowl game. Had they not played each other, Houston would have been in a BCS bowl game. The time to take advantage of our momentum to the BE is now in basketball. I would think that there are coaches out there that would be thrilled to come to SMU and lead this program in the right way to the BE. So thanks Doh for bringing in some good personnel and talent. But unless he can put it to good use, it is not helping us.
Re: Preview before Conference Play
We got a Big East invite b/c of our commitment, money, market, facilities, not true progress on or off the field or court. I give Turner and Orsini credit for being dilligent in their AQ pursuit. I give Jones credit for getting a great contract, and being a pretty good PR man, cause he's convinced a few that he's a genius, which strikes me as funny. I've watched tons of CUSA football, and its a joke. I look forward to the Big East in that regard. Houston lose 4 or 5 games in a crap league like the ACC. Lets not talk BCS bowl, cause that would have been a farce, no different than Hawaii was a farce. I'm certainly not here to say Doh is the guy for the job. I'm sick and tired of his schtick, and lack of results. That said, we're a team w/9 new players, 6 of which are frosh. They played well this past week, and should have walked w/at least one more win. If they play that way in CUSA, they'll be ok. Some of the early losses [deleted] me off far more. Some folks around here just need to ease away from the ledge, when the reality is they are pretty close and competing well w/power conference squads. Teams that young, that play power conference teams that close, tend to get better. Everyone chill
Re: Preview before Conference PlayTotally agree with hoop in all respects on this. reaching 6-7 wins in CUSA football is no better then CIT tourny in basketball - and frankly on a relative basis i think CUSA is stronger in basketball then in football. Our incoming talent in basketball is better then the incoming talent in football (now that we have lost a few of Klemm's boys) on a relative basis.
we have better talent in basketball then we have had in years - and I mean 20 years. Jackson state is the game to [deleted] about - that was a giant egg (although their losses are impressive teams). Losing to OSU in 2 OT's and ol Miss by a bucket is actually good news - we get some time to gel this thing and we will end the year strong with a VERY nice year ahead in 2012-13. Doh loosens the reins a bit and we will have some fun this year.
Re: Preview before Conference Playdisagree Travis "so good i had to post it twice" Bickle - we have some nice talent on this team right now. I didnt say great - i said best we have had in 20 yrs. We just havent had much in 20 yrs.
If you dont see a huge improvement with who is on this roster right now compared to where we were five yrs ago you just havent been following this team very much.
Re: Preview before Conference PlayThe roster looks good this year and the 7 footer coming in has some potential
Re: Preview before Conference PlayNo, the 7 footer is going to be great but Brian Bernardi is a keeper!!
Re: Preview before Conference PlayWe have some nice players who will grow into the game. And Doh hasn't recruited ACC or BE talent because we were recruiting CUSA. I'm sure he tried, but if you were a Five Star player and you have offers from BE teams, Big XII teams, ACC teams, Big Ten teams, Pac 12 teams would you go to a rebuilding CUSA team or one of those other programs where you had a pretty good shot of going to the dance year in and year out, and after a year of college, heading up the road to the NBA. As I've said, right now, Doh has to follow the four year player strategy that VCU and George Mason employ. Put together solid 7-8 man teams, and when it is upperclass laden, then make a run because he can't do the 1 year rental players. If he has a break-through, you know a Butler, VCU, GMU kind of year, then the five star rental players take a second look. At least now he can start to recruit players with the BE hoops label instead of CUSA.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Preview before Conference PlayExcept for recent results in league play, CUSA in FB and BB and SMU in FB and BB are actually quite similar.
If we use Sagarin as one measure. This season the CUSA is 8/26 in FB and 10/32 in BB. SMU is just below the midpoint in both FB and BB. Not too much fodder for the FB>BB or BB>FB arguments. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: Preview before Conference Play
Actually, I think Shumate was a good coach, but a horrific (and from what I heard uninterested) recruiter. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Preview before Conference PlayThe Birmingham New reports that tonight's game between Memphis and UAB will have 8,500+ in attendance - Bartow Arena UAB. Said some fans camped out to be the first through the doors.
Preview before Conference Play
Wasn't it the 92-93 season when won the SWC? It's always been said that the players that year did not want to play the boring half court game and Shumate nearly had a player revolt unless he let the players open it up and run up and down the court. I seem to remember a lot of high scoring 80+ point games that year. Perhaps that's an idea for the players on the team now so we can get out of this slow down boring 50 point a game style of play? Peruna is my mascot!
