I think we beat Houston tomorrow. After that, wins could be tough.

Hoop Fan wrote:I imagine you hate the ACC tourney because its always a valentine to UNC and Duke and home games for them in Charlotte or Greensboro. If we played the CUSA tourney in Houston, I wouldn't kill Doh for losing to Rice, but losing to Rice in El Paso like that in year 5 with Papa was unforgivable to me.

The reason i look at the conference tourney is its usually neutral floor, nobody sneaks up on anybody else, its about coaching adjustments because usually you have played the opponent twice already, and you have to bring your best effort no matter what. There are no excuses like we just had final exams or anything like that.

That's definitely a huge part of it w/the ACC tourney. Beyond that, I just don't like the idea of an event, completely designed for money/TV, taking the place of the regular season. It's a farce when legit teams that have a body of work, get iced from the postseason, cause some scrub(like us this year) steps ups and bites the better team, in a one-off. It's not a measure of anything, other than a single point in time.

All that said, Doh stinks in conference, in the OOC, in preseason & postseason tourneys. For that body of work, he gets the axe. Losing to Rice last year was super frustrating, and really put a damper on the year. That said, the team played pretty well over the last 2/3s of the season, so it didn't make or break anything for me personally. No different than us winning the CUSA tourney this year, won't really mean this team is good, just on a hot streak. Getting run by everyone this year, while amassing a bunch of talent that seemingly doesn't fit his new system, only to have to go back to his old system, is the definition of chasing your tail. For that, you chop off the head, and hopefully that stops us from chasing our tail any longer

Heh, not sure if you have to be on dope to believe that SMU could beat a team that is 4-9 in conference play and a team that we beat by 16 just last month. Hell, if we win tomorrow, we have the same record as Houston and hold the tie breaker on them.

I still say we win it tomorrow, after that, we would need a nice upset to win another game.

I updated the numbers on the first post and threw in some numbers about the just completed season.

Numbers don't lie.

I had hoped that last year was a corner turn for this program. The CIT run indicated that perhaps, Doh's coaching had improved. This year proved it was all a canard. I wish Doh well, he did some good things, but he's really not head coach material. Perhaps a recruiting assistant, perhaps an NBA assistant, perhaps in a fundraising capacity, but I think he's shown that as a head coach, he's just out of his element.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Although I never heard him, I bet he's good as a broadcast analyst. He just needs to swallow his pride and leverage his strengths... which are not on the court. Dohert, please stay away from the sidelines unless you are wearing a headset.

If we can keep the guys we have and the recruits that have committed then I'd say we can thank Doh for leaving us with some talent for the new coach to work with.

Time will tell. He certainly overstated/overhyped the impact his existing team would have this year. There's only one way... and that way is UP!

I agree he left us with some talent. Now to get a coach who can develop the talent we all see. Also need a big man and new point guard to start the Big East.

For once, I agree completely with MM.

Doherty has been given a fair chance and has no real success to point to. We are no better since we hired him.

Best of luck to coach Doh. It is time to move on.

"Doherty is 80-109 in six seasons at SMU, including just one winning season and an 0-6 record in the conference tournament." This says it all. Close the door on the Doherty disaster and open a new chapter.
