Regardless if he's a nice guy off the court, Doherty has single handedly run this program into the ground. He knows how to shake the right hands, kiss the right butts, and how to get donors to open their wallets. Unfortunately he humilates the players, demotivates them endlessly, and has inconsistent rotations in an offense that handcuffs each and every team member. I for one, will quietly celebrate when SMU officially announces his departure. I have attended nearly each and every game for more than 35 years, and I cannot remember a more disappointing season in the recent history of SMU basketball. We have given him enough time to succeed... and he has not.

I agree it is time for a new direction, but I am not sure it is fair to say he single handedly ran the program into the ground. That makes it sound like the program was doing well before we got here and he made it worse. Do you really think that is the case?

This sums up Matt Doherty's tenure at SMU. Also include we really had no road (or home) win worth [deleted] either.
TCU was nice this year.

I did not like what I read and heard with regard to his time at UNC. UNC fans are very knowledgeable and passionate and they saw right through his glaring weaknesses very early on both as a bench coach and his ability to deal with players. Yes, he recruited well there, but any top program has a huge recruiting advantage over the programs with out the UNC history and tradition. I thought his UNC issues involved his lack of personal people skills with players, negativity and temper and that were not easily changed. Unfortunately, I do not think he significantly overcame his weaknesses and our program has never progressed as a result.
The problem w/that line of thinking is the stakes are high ie Big East, and we can't afford taking guys w/o a quality track record. This is a Big East job now and assistants aren't a slam dunk. If you have the money, and IF we're serious about winning, you find a slam dunk. That doesn't mean profile, just someone who has led before and has proven he can get it done. Let's not aim low and pay high

Totally agree, however the decision will be driven by how much money Orsini has secured from private donors to hire the new coach. My guess is he certainly had a tough road in front of him given the depths this program has sunk under Doherty's "direction." However, since the program is at such a low point, and given the Big East visibility, I bet some donors have stepped up so our university doesn't completely embarass itself. It's sad we are heading into the Big East in a rebuilding mode. This will give our program and school the national visibility we don't want. Whoever is hired, it's going to take a while for him to right the ship/Titantic.

I don't know, however, he would be great singing the national anthem. I wouldn't give him a long term contract since he's in his mid 80s!

Are you really trying to tell me that 1500 souls go and watch us play basketball?!
I bet that number is closer to 700.

Really looking forward to seeing a new head coach on the sideline next year. I hope Orsini is getting close to securing a quality coach for the team and the fans.

Look at the job Heath has done at USF in the Big East. He was on our radar when we hired Tubbs and with the BE name for his institution, he has taken it to a new level.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Maybe Orsini and RGT will move Doherty to a fund raising/PR/donor relations capacity since we are obligated to pay him $450K for another year anyway. If he brings in an additional $500K, at least we are better than if we kicked his butt out on the street totally. Make him work to pay for his last year and cover Orsini's mistake. I know the team, fans, and most people within the Athletics Dept. would hate this... but it might make sense. Thoughts?

Why? This is what I have been advocating for awhile now, but it is doubtful Doh takes it. What is in it for him?

He can take it or leave it. Maybe if he declines, we have an out.

That's the true sign of just how low the program has fallen; the 1500 has dwindled
