Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripWhat, you don't want SMU to be a rich version of "Hoosiers"?
Re: North Texas denied NCAA triplol, I just had a well known assistant, that currently coaches in a huge conference, tell me SMU won't hire a black guy cause we're racist. eff me
Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripIs that "I think SMU won't" or "No, I know they won't."
Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripAlthough come to think of it, if it's perception and not some lone nut, there isn't much difference lol.
North Texas denied NCAA tripHaven't two of our last four head coaches been black?
Derail the Frogs!
Re: North Texas denied NCAA trip
Well, in that person's case, hoopmanx, you can't cure stupid.
Re: North Texas denied NCAA trip
I happen to think we'll hire a brother, just b/c SMU has a perceived race issue. That's the smart thing to do. That said, I'm not gonna lie and say I don't agree w/the assistant
Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripWait a second...I thought we had eased -- not eliminated -- the tensions with South Dallas because we got Giles and Jalen and played that game against Jackson St. at Ellis. We've discussed numerous times where it was considered that Doherty had rehabbed the program in several avenues and got the barbershops to at least ease off the throttle.
And then you get this comment? Where the hell is this guy from? I'm really effing tired of this. It's getting to the point with some of our critics that we will never never never be able to do enough to pacify them and make them feel like we're whole in their book. They will ALWAYS hang something over our head because they're more interested in owning the argument then really looking at it. I'll go so far as to call that assistant racist because of his perception is reality remark.
Re: North Texas denied NCAA trip
Well, he was speaking of the school, admin, & general admissions, more than the program currently. Doh did rehab the position, and we do have South Dallas kids, but its more about the age old perception of the school and what he's heard from coaches who have worked there. Not much you can do about it, but it's one reason we need a black head coach, and we need to support him, in hopes of real success. Look at Georgetown. There are basically no black guys in the entire school, but half the country think its an HBCU lol. IF SMU wants hoops success long-term, and to defeat prejudices, a lily white Park Cities hire, won't cut it
Re: North Texas denied NCAA trip
I hear you and agree with you but that remark was made with ignorance as well.
Re: North Texas denied NCAA trip
I don't really think so, go ask players in football or hoops. They value the education, the opportunity, and their teammates, but pretty much all dislike the student body

We are who we are - an affluent, expensive, above average academic institution. We all know what that means in terms of a student body. Having said that Hoopmanx, if I were to ask you to rank SMU, UT, and A&M 1 - 3 on who has the highest percentage of black students, who would you rank 1st, 2nd, and 3rd?????????

I'd actually think A&M has the lowest percentage of black kids. Perception is a beast, we just need to, as an institution, actively fight the stereotype. Can't do more than that. Part of that is hiring a qualified brother to lead this program into the Big East. Can't hurt.
Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripTotally agree. We rank ahead of both, by the way, and yes, A&M is last. Just a little ammo for you the next time someone makes that kind of comment. I know we have an incredibly long way to go to make that stereotype go away or at least not be at the forefront of any discussion.
I don't know if it will make you feel any better but Turner and Orsini know they have to hit a home run on this thing. If we don't improve immensely - and quickly, the Big East could boot us in a couple of years like they did Temple. Turner and Orsini understand this...........
Re: North Texas denied NCAA tripBTW, WKU just took the interim tag off their coach
