Re: DOH IS GONEGood man, but just didn't get it done here. No doubt he gave it his best shot, but in the end, it was just not the right job. He'll be fine in whatever endeavor he pursues in the future. Now, he can leave, sit out a year, get a check, drink pina coladas, and not have to worry about 18 year olds.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: DOH IS GONEEnd of story! Should have been gone two or three years ago, but a contract extension...OUCH! Hope SMU makes better decisions for the future. Here we go!
Re: DOH IS GONE
No, he shouldn't have. This has been discussed ad nasuem. Short and simple, AD & coach publicly stated it was a five year rebuild. You need a psych eval if you want to churn through Doh after three years, right after a horseh*t firing of Tubbs. Try getting anyone decent to look at the job after that.
Re: DOH IS GONE
She is lucky that no one cares.
Re: DOH IS GONEGood luck. I'm just a little pissed that you left the program in shambles. We have a big hole to dig out of before the Big East opponents come to town.
Re: DOH IS GONE
It was time for SMU to go in another direction and Doh's time ran its course here. But if you try to argue that the program is in any worse shape than when he took over, I would say you are crazy. In my opinion, the program is in BETTER shape than when Doh took over. Are we better off enough after 6 years where Doh should stay, absolutely not. That is why he got fired. So, if we are currently in a shambles then we were even worse off 6 years ago if you ask me.
Re: DOH IS GONE
No we don't. We just ran a system that didn't fit the kids on the team this year. We have decent talent, more in the pipeline, just pick up the pace a bunch. Need some attrition, force open a ship or two, but this past season isn't indicative of what we have. It was a coaching atrocity
Re: DOH IS GONEMustangIcon, I am sad to say you are grossly mistaken. This program, under Doherty, is in poor shape. Talk to me after next season and tell me you truly believe Duh left this program in better shape. ADs don't fire successful coaches that have built solid programs. You are believing his spin... or are related to him. He got you.
Re: DOH IS GONEIt is definitely in better shape then when he got here. That's not to say it is in good shape. Lots of work to do - but it was rock bottom when he got here due to several factors we don't need to re-hash
Re: DOH IS GONEIf you define last in CUSA as progress. REALLY? So glad he is gone.
Re: DOH IS GONENice no longer having grassroots spit in our faces as they were right after he took the job. Also nice that there aren't rampant brush fires with the local community. Crum Center, 40 mill. in upgrades, Big East coming, deeper roster, sprinkled with transfers from local HS. Yeah, I'm taking the glass half full approach. Look, Doh didn't win anywhere near enough games, and he made a shi* ton of mistakes along the way that look really, really bad. Like Pine Bluff bad. Bad take the long view here. The program isn't going to evaporate suddenly tomorrow simply because we suck in the W/L column today. There's more work that needs to be done, but in 2012, the program is in a better position to achieve higher levels of sustainable success than it was on the day that Robo took the job.
Re: DOH IS GONEAgree HockeyGuy. I know the team will rebound (pun intended) from a poor leader.
Re: DOH IS GONEWhen we axed Tubbs, we had hit our program's low. Doh was hired to dig it out, and he wasn't able to...but we aren't any worse in the hole than we were when Doh was hired. In many respects (grassroots-wise), we are in (slightly) better shape
DOH IS GONEThe w/l record under Doh was bad, but to fail to see that we are better off as a basketball program now than when Tubbs was fired is, in my opinion, overly and undeservedly negative. We have better players now than we did then. We are about to have much better facilities, and we are joining the Big East. What is more important is that SMU can now show its commitment to basketball in a much more confident manner, attractive to coaches. Doh was given 6 years, even with poor results on the court. By this, painful though it has been to watch, SMU has shown that it is prepared to give a coach time and that sort of stability is important when finding a top coach. We are now prepared to pay a very competitive salary for a top coach, and playing in the BE is great exposure for the coach also. I expect that SO will be well guided in the selection process and would bet that he talked to a lot of people about the best candidates while on the NCAA selection committee.
I can't wait for next season already. Mustangs Abu!
