[quote="Stlhockeyguy02"]I got a kick out of the stretch made that offering a to write a huge check for a coach is somehow a lesson not learned from the death penalty...from a law school student nonetheless. Personally, if I tried a logic train like that in law school I'd get kicked in the nuts by someone. quote]

While schools like UNT and Marquette may not have rich alums, great universities have plenty of them.

Marquette's total endowment is $401m. In addition to having a $1.4B endowment, rich SMU alums have rebuilt the entire campus including the only red brick neo-georgian parking garage in the world and a presidential library. It is my understanding the new campus cost something like another billion dollars.

I don't blame them for having that reaction whatsoever. I just hope they realize that most of us here don't really see the Buzz hiring happening and most of the discussion regarding that is a "hmm maybe this is why he would leave Marquette for SMU" speculation.

aint it great though? SMU and marquette in a cat fight about their coach? Even if it is crazy -its a ton less crazy then it was 4 months ago before the Big East raised its head. This BCS thing might just be kind of cool.

And if they think we are just going to sign up for our whipping without getting something competitive on the floor - Buzz or not - they have another thing coming.

Time to give them a concussion with our wallet.

Where are all of the banners that should be hanging in Moody according to one SMU fan:

"Before the death penalty, SMU basketball ruled the SWC--I mean ruled! We were conference champions for well over 80% of the conference's history. Granted the southwest wasn't known for its powerhouse programs, but we were it. Dallas and Houston are now powerhouse areas for major national high school players--and that is a huge difference between the 70's and 80's and today."

I know we had some good years in the 50's................

From the media guide:

Conference Championships: 14 (TIAA 1917; SWC 1935, 37, 55, 56, 57, 58, 62, 65, 66, 67, 72, 88, 93)
Conference Tournament Championships: 1 (SWC 1988)

SWC run from 1918-1995, so 80% seems a little high. :P

80% is high, but we had the 2nd highest win percentage in the old SWC. Certainly competitive most years.

I did that, but what they said pmo! I apologize to you all. But their comments on what happened 25 year ago really set me off--call it poetic license or just BS!

My thought exactly. If true, $2.4 million a year puts us in elite company.

That money opens up the contestant pool a bit...no longer have to look at only mid-major type guys. Start thinking of current, successful head coaches that may want a change of scenery or a bit more money.

I like where we are headed, even if Buzz is a no-go.

Do we really feel that SMU would more than quadruple DOH's salary? A generous, but more realisitc number of 2 x DOH or $1m, we would still be competitive for a quality hire. Remember JJ is at $2m with the enormous help of the CofC. We should not be drafting checks for someone else to honor, not to mention the $40m recently committed to rennovate the iconic Moody Colesium.

Having said the above, we do need a splash BB coach hire for recruits, fans and, especially, the student body, who needs to get fired up put their butts in the seats, like most BE teams do regularly. We are talking big leagues and our behavior will be noticed.

Red championship banners are on the wall at the Crum Center practice court.

Plus one. I honestly don't care if we get Williams. He is a great coach. I am just glad we are making it clear to the world that we don't intend to be to the Big East's what Rice was to the SWC.

It's not like a new coach is gonna really cost the program that much more cash. Our TV contract increases are gonna easily cover the cost of $2.5million coach. It's not like we dont spend money on athletics around here. Toss in the extra money for butts in seats at Moody that will come with the Big East and there is no reason not to break out the wallet and go buy us a program.
