Buzz Williams smokescreen

ponyboy wrote:Why does age matter?

The article was comparing his accomplishments to the other coaches left in the region. They are older, thus have been coaching longer, and thus have more sweet 16 appearances, etc. That is why he mentioned age.

we are probably a nice backup plan for Buzz. Using us for leverage and if he doesnt get what he wants from MU, wouldn't mind coming here. i'd set the odds about 20% but thats not bad odds. If not Buzz, would still like to see Bruiser.

Whereever there's a coach, there's an agent looking for an edge. A little chaos helps to make it so the coach gets more money, hence the agent gets more money. The agent can leak and the coach can deny. Its all a perfect smokey system. Hey go for the gusto, Boeheim. He's mad at Syracuse for leaving the BE. Mad at them for making him fire his buddy, Bernie. Mad about the disqualification of Fab Melo. He's a certified coaching genius with his match-up zone defense. He'd be the ultimate out of the blue, big hire.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Generally I agree with you, but Buzz Williams does not have an agent

Back in the day, I did a little mergers & acquisitions work for my company. I cannot tell you how many times that I read quotes from CEO's in the WSJ claiming the "Company is not for sale" while I had the pitch book from their I-bank on my desk. Technically, the company was not for sale. On the other hand, if the boys at Goldman Sachs convinced my company to make an offer, it would have to be considered by the board.

BUT - Boeheim isn't leaving Syracuse. He loves it in upstate NY. They let him coach BB and otherwise leave him alone.

Personally, I think Buzz is a real long shot, just based on what I've heard. That said, even IF Buzz did use a traditional agent, he's not looking for more money from Marquette. He's already very well paid, and the /cost/length/buyout of his deal is already causing problems for him, in terms of getting to jobs he'd rather have, see OU & A$M. Last thinghe's gonna do is take a few more bucks, to lock himself to Milwaukee for any longer than need be

i'm not saying more money is the only or even the main thing he wants. But even guys who are very well paid want more money. Seems to be human nature.

Nothing like taking a moribund program and building it back up just as it jumps to a conference with a huge national presence in the sport. Maybe that's our hook. Coaches are funny guys; a lot of em have huge egos and maybe one of em just can't pass up on saying "yep, I'm gonna do it. Not anyone else. Me." Doh felt that way coming in; he just didn't do any homework on the job and then turned out to be a pretty awful bench coach and couldn't manage a roster.

StL.- yep, agree. I suspect that our new coach will be more driven by his ego of turning this program around than the dollars and cents aspect of the job.

Phil Bennett was the same way, and he was pretty open about it. He mentioned on the record that his "coaching buddies" said don't take the job, it's a career killer, and he basically said "nope, I'm the guy. I'm going to be the one to bring them back." Now, obviously there's just a little bit of a difference between a guy like PB and the level of candidates we hope to entice to take over our lovely little hoops program.

The problem for Bennett was taking our job as his first job. I think he can coach, but may not get another shot.
