"Why should freshmen be ineligible? For basketball, half the good players are freshmen. Not to mention that the extra year in the NCAA does no good if they aren't playing ..."

If they all are required to stay two years, then half the good players would then be sophomores or first year players. That extra year (freshman year) might let them catch up on their education and of course they could "practice".

What did you score?

You are too young to know/remember that frosh were ineligible until 1968. Philosophy was that a frosh had to prove themselves academically before they were eligible to compete in sports. This kept athletics in its proper perspective.

If the NBA puts an age restriction; the kids that gifted athletically, but are at risk academically, will head overseas and collect a paycheck to play basketball{Brandon Jennings, Jeremy Tyler}. The NBA is part of the problem, because they give million dollar salaries to kids bypassing college to play in the NBA. The kids coming out of high school should get a 2 year contract. $100,000 for year 1, and $200,000 for year 2. After 2 years, and the kid shows he has talent to play at the NBA level, the teams can negotiate a new multi million dollar salary for the kid.
