They have the option by most colleges to comeback and get there degrees if needed. And while they are heree they should get as much class work done as they can adequately handle.

This is total BS, and very insulting to the thousands of actual scholar athletes across the nation.

When he is bounced out of the NBA after the first cut where the hell are you going to be for the next 50 years of his life? If it was up to you he would major in Tiddle-Winks and flush an opportunity for a real education down the drain. if you don't believe in student athletes go support the NBA-

Thank you Stallion. You said much more eloquently than I have trying to say this.

From my time at SMU and around the athletic department during the Pony Express Days I could quickly tick off 25 Student Athletes that I personally know have been extremely successful.

And I bet there are success stories from minorities and students who would never had an opportunity to attend a school like SMU

Jerry Levias-Academic All-American
Rufus Cormier-recognized as one of the top lawyers in Houston
Tennell Atkins-Dallas City Council
Rufus Shaw was a prominent South Dallas political writer, commentator, personality
I see Jason Evans weekly on TV as Dallas Fire Department Head of Communications
Bobby Leach has been on several SMU Leadership positions-I don't know what he does but bet he's been successful

Maybe we need an Alumni version of the Jerry Levias No. 23 Award to recognize minorities who have gone on to have successful careers. I bet there are a bunch more and would love to hear about them. Some of these kids might come in with a 5th grade or 7th grade reading level. Guess what we got them for 4-5 years and we surround them with academic help and assistance-we can get them to a college reading level.

Sounds like you're both out on the 'holier than thou' limb. Reality of the big time student athlete somewhere in between.

exactly fbdad.

and in that range it probably matters ...i don't know...umm...how GOOD you actually are at the sport in question. just as in the NFL, star players may get to be late to a meeting or miss a practice with no consequences...but a special teams type guy may get kicked off the team for those infractions.

i'm all for guys trying to get an education while they are in school, but it is their choice. if MK can't succeed in the classroom, why flunk him and ruin the ONE thing he actually came to SMU to do - play basketball!!

some of you older guys need to get with the reality of college sports in 2014. Not all schools make their athletes go to class, or actually learn something. we are hurting ourselves (on the court) by making MK ineligible - that is the reality.

I will be very excited to have him back with some force in the middle and banging for rebounds. Every team has been pushing us out of position for rebounds.

Do we really want to have any player spend even two years here and end up being functionally illiterate, like Dexter Manley was after 4 years at Oklahoma State? In reality, there is really no excuse for flunking any course at SMU. None. You have tutors, you have other students (even girlfriends) who will help you study for a class. I suspect since the frats have test banks on professors, the athletic department does as well. I know that the players are told which profs are reasonable and which ones want to brag at the Faculty Club about flunking an athlete. The key fact is and I've taught college classes. If a student is coming to class, showing interest in the subject and appears to be making positive progress, the prof is going to cut him some slack. An F becomes a D, a D becomes a C- and so forth. LB coached Allen Iverson who managed to stay eligible at Georgetown despite being a bit of a prima donna. I so vividly remember a football player telling me, I'll never play in the NFL, and this is my job, to play football so I can get this degree and have a life not driving a dump truck.

It almost sounds like you want people to hold Kennedy responsible for himself? That's just crazy talk.

Yes, we are definitely making a statement to Kennedy. Take that Markus. We sure showed him didn't we.
