Right, the scholarship reductions don't bug me w/this staff. We seem to evaluate well and coach them up. Perfect scenario to get through this, just have to prospect well. I'd suspect get anew scholarships back w/appeal but some accommodation should be made for potentially losing 3 kids for half a season.

The idea of seniors transferring either mid-first semester or during winter break is really weird to me. Not saying it won't happen. . .because after all this is SMU and the next piece of bad news is always right around the corner. But how many schools even accept senior transfers mid-school year? So I just transfer to UCLA for the second semester of my senior year and get a UCLA degree? Makes no sense. I know different rules seem to apply for scholarship athletes, but still. . .

Well if they do. And one of them is Nic, maybe we can revisit the whole "playing for KU has no downside". Give someone a taste of the greener grass and an unknown all of a sudden becomes an option

Hoopman are you saying you have reason to believe they will transfer? Or just playing the what if game?

Talk about short sighted. I would have to question their intelligence if either of these guys were to transfer at mid year to go try and fit into a roster of some team that has played half a season already?? I would think that would be a chemistry nightmare. Plus, you are learning under a HOF coach who has every NBA GM on speed dial. Just to have a shot to play in the NCAA tournament with no guarantee of anything more than one extra game? These guys are not Jimmy Chitwood who need one more shot at the limelight before hanging up the hightops. They have plenty more battles in the future when they get paid to ball. Maybe I am discounting the magic of the tournament, but I have always felt that is more important to the fans than the players. Particularly the ones that will be playing at the next level.

So we will in essence only lose 3 scholarships for 3 years meaning we will be down from 13 to 10? My understanding was 3 scholarships each season for 3 years getting us down from 13 to 10 to 7? Please explain.

the scholarship count is actually off the top. Usually you have 13 but SMU will have to count down 7 more scholarships over following 3 seasons. SMU can choose how to do this. An example could be

2015-16 11 (-2)
2016-17 10 (-3)
2017-18 10 (-3)
2018-19 12 (-1)
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

If they are a bit lucky and good with recruiting, this could still be good. Teams usually don't play more than 8 or 9 in a game.

We also could probably count those scholarships off the -7 we owe over 3 next years but the wording of the NCAA holding I thought said those 7 were to come off starting in 2016-17 season. I bet we could get a waiver on that

You are right on the NCAA wording.

At this point, I will be happy to have an opportunity to watch and root for Nic and Kennedy at another school. It would hurt our team alot this year, but if smu can get their scholarships back and with the added minutes for our young guys, we can at least get a head start on the future.

Mentioning UCLA is interesting...in February 1987 couple guys from our football team transferred to UCLA on the quarter system...and played spring ball. NCAA didn't specifically address that contingency and the schools were left to do what met their admissions policy. Instant eligibility is instant eligibility.

Effing NCAA doesn't make "mistakes"...7 away games in a nine team conference in 1988 specifically to trash the 1988 season. And now? Larry can't coach until next semester? Top two guys could transfer as early as December 5 into a quarter system school never be coached by Larry again? NCAA is baiting them...

We will not get our scholarships back (barring the results of an appeal) as the scholarship penalty starts next year and the two scholarship credit is based on the school's self-imposed two scholarship penalty this year, not scholarships that go unused this year.
