Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadVery disappointing game.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadRice played great fundamental basketball. Our team looked like dogs chasing cars
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadBraun's a good coach, Kazemi is the best player on the floor, and Jackson would be our best guard. They played very well and we were flat & unprepared.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadFact is Doh is here for the rest of this season and probably next season. Might as well hope that he learns how to coach between now and then. Talent gets you so far. Coaching puts you in the next strata. Doh has a good personality, and is good at raising money and talking to recruits. He'd be a good assistant AD. But his coaching skills were laid bare at UNC. To see what his successor did with his recruits tells you volumes. He hasn't completely learned from that experience. If you are not a good x and o's guy, there are a ton of coaches out there who have zero personality who are great x and o's guys who would love to handle that part of the game for you. If you can't manage substitutions well, you have that guy sit next to you on the bench. A great X and O guy can adapt offenses to suit personnel. A great X and O guy can adapt defenses to suit personnel. If Doh doesn't have that, he needs to find one. Otherwise, he's going to be either fired or kicked upstairs before we join the Big East.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Official SMU/Rice Threadbest we can hope for if Doh stays around is sooner or later talent overcomes bench shortfalls and we see a flash in the pan Shumate type season.
I like that Doh has rehabbed the HC position and like that he's a good ambassador for SMU outside of basketball season. I dont like that his high point will probably be what we saw last season. .500 in the Big East and a win or two in the conference tournament is what we aspire to now. I dont think Doh gets us there. Ever. Get a new guy who will have a year in CUSA to tune up for Big East otherwise prepare for a 1-15 run in 2013 in conference I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
That feels about right to me.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadI think Doh would be great in the Athletic Dept office helping to raise money and promote SMU, just not on the bench coaching the team
Pony Up!
Re: Official SMU/Rice Threadcoaches get kicked upstairs all the time. See RC Slocum, David McWilliams

Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
I would tend to doubt it, but it should at least be broached. He's not coaching this team anyway, it's all Mangino w/players Mangino had no part in selecting. This is the problem w/Orsini trying to cover his own rear. He selects overrated coaches, gives them ridiculous contracts, then when his hands start to get bloody, he goes martial law and starts selecting assistants for the coaches. If you don't trust the coach you hired, to hire his own people, you have to part ways. My job allows me to talk to coaches daily, and ALL of them think Orsini's handling of the hoops coach & staff is beyond ridiculous. I like a properly run princeton, but you can't allow a coach to change philosophies mid-tenure, to a system he has no idea how to coach and has never coached. At that point, it doesn't matter who you surround him with, he's no longer head coach, just a figurehead.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadI do believe Orsini recognizes that what's going on isnt gonna cut it in the BE
We're going to have fantastic facilities with a renovated Moody to compliment Crum which is already better than what most have in CUSA or BE. Almost a shame that Crum was built to house the crap that's been rolled out the last however many years. I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
I'm sure Orsini recognizes it, but he's still the guy that gave Doh a 7 yr deal, w/laughable rollovers. Allowed him to gut the roster, and run off whomever he wanted. Then allowed his coach to change the programs direction, mid tenure, to a system that is very difficult to learn & execute properly. He reatins the head coach, but selects that coaches staff? Just fire the head coach. You guys have to understand, that even though he may see the need for change, he has no track record of enacting it successfully at any level in hoops. Quite frankly, he's one of the worst hoops ADs I've ever seen or been around, and that's saying something, cause I'm active w/20 plus schools right now
Re: Official SMU/Rice Threadsolution:
Matt Doherty Associate Director of Athletics-Basketball (214)-768-HOOP The more I think about it, Doh would love to have a HC he could boss around I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
uh, I was saying this all last year and you seemed to take huge exception to it. It had very little chance to work because everybody including of course the players see it for what it is. The other thing I said last spring is that poor roster management doomed this season and even next season at least because we had no real 5 in waiting to replace Papa in offensive post prescence, defending the post and rebounding. We got really exposed by Rice on the blocks last night. Leslee is great, but can't even come close to stopping real post men. I don't know how we beat Tulsa, but the 5 spot is a huge hole on both ends. On offense, no one we have can really post up and either score or draw the defense and kick it out for open shots. Maybe Blaise will be that guy when he shows up, but he is two years away from being a force at least. Doh can't have two more years to assemble the needed pieces, he's had too long already.
