I agree that Tubbs would be tremendously helped by the aid of more Jucos and it is not his fault that there are some he simply cannot get right now. I cannot expect as quick of a turnaround for Tubbs as we saw for Penders. But I do expect progress. Hopefully Tubbs will still pull a big time recruit to come in as a starter next year. I fear if he does not we will see more of the same next year (unless someone grows into being a legit, consistent D1 scoring threat) which would leave him with 1 year left and not much of anything to show for it.
Hoop Fan, one of your and JT's defenses of Tubbs is that nobody else would ever come here. First, that is not a ringing endorsement. Second, that just isn't true. Wojcik would have come here if we offered, but now he is at Tulsa. Before hiring Dement, we interviewed Tommy Amacker, who eventually went to Seton Hall and now is at Michigan. Would Bill Self come here? No. But let's stop the charade that SMU can do no better than to get the no. 2 or 3 assistant from a Big XII school.
That is my point!!!!!! We are the problem!!!!!
The point is that when you fire a coach after two years, no one of any stature will want to come into an environment where you must win immediately with talent that you never recruited. Especially at a school like SMU where JUCO's and transfers face real obstacles in getting admitted. If Tubbs did violate NCAA rules and is thrown under the bus for that, then that is a different scenario and coaches would be more interested in applying.
Dont put words in my mouth, I said Penders wouldn't come here. I'm not talking about Bill Self. Wojcik would have come here sure, and he would have flailed around recruiting wise like a fish out of water in Dallas. Tulsa is a better fit for him and a better job frankly. Your Tommy Amaker reference is fine, but nothing to suggest he would have actually taken our job. Certainly he wouldnt have if Seton Hall had offered. Nonetheless, most people who follow Big 10 basketball consider Amaker a failure at Michigan. By the way, like BHop, Daniel Horton never made to an ncaa tournament either.
Well in fairness I have always admitted to being a Tubbs apologist and that statement was made to challenge those who are obviously not, not as a a defense of Tubbs. I have always held that we are in a better position of recruiting Dallas with Tubbs, have a better defensive team with Tubbs, and someone who is committed to SMU with Tubbs, rather than treating it as a stepping stone. I also happen to think that makes him a better fit at SMU than any other coach who could reasonably be expected to come here. Not talking about those who might have come here in the past, mind you, but now. People are calling for his head now, and the Tulsa coach ain't available anymore. So I as again, who is out there who would come here that's better for SMU than Tubbs?
Well work has kept me away from posting but I would like add my $.02
I think people calling for JT’s head after just 2 years are not being realistic. But I also believe those who are not concerned about JT’s performance are also not looking at this objectively. We have a team ranked #268. We are in the middle of a bad recruiting class. We lose our top player and no matter how it is spinned, I do not believe Bamba and Morris will improve their game to such a degree that we will become a top #120 program without serious upgrades. Bad facilities seem to be the retort-of-the-day, but it didn’t hinder Dement enough to produce the garbage we all witnessed this past season, which I believe was SMU’s all-time worst. Finally, that post by Pony_Fan about DRoberts was genuinely funny.
ok, I understand what you are saying, but do you really think the difference between #268 and #120 is something scientific? The RPI rankings are a joke, certainly nothing reliable at the range you are talking about. Its debatable whether the top 30 rpi rankings are even worth a damn. Bamba and Morris can certainly become pieces of the puzzle on a top 100 (post season caliber) team. Granted, Tubbs needs to get the other pieces, but its a little early to give up on him.
by the way, i obviously support tubbs, but more than anything I am arguing against the other side which as been proactive in bashing Tubbs. Notice I am not on here calling for a contract extension. I would be inclined to give him the fifth year he should have gotten from the beginning, but anything more than that has to be earned through results.
To be honest, I am not too too big on RPI ratings. I don't know if there is any real distinct difference from a team that is say 260th as opposed to a team that is 230th. So Hoop, I agree with you in that regard but I feel there is CERTAINLY a very big difference between 120 and 268.
*120 would mean you have played some decent out of conference games and won a couple along with doing okay in your conference schedule. *268 would mean you played panzies out of conference and lost vs any that resembled an actual D1 program along with doing poorly in your conference schedule. The difference is very distinct to me and I cannot wait until we return to being the better of the two and moving on upward from there. Hopefully Tubbs is the guy to take us there and 3 years from now I will be saying how silly I was to ever think he wouldn't. I, like everyone on this board, desperately want SMU to be good in our two revenue sports. I hope you are right and that Tubbs is the guy to get it done.
we had a bad year, the rpi ranking is just another way of saying it. But I dont think Tubbs is recruiting anywhere near as low as #268. Looking back, Dements last two classes might have ranked in the 200's. Now, if Tubbs doesn't sign anyone good this spring, I will agree then the current class is going to hurt us. Lets wait a few more weeks to see what happens with the two scholarships we have to give since we have only taken one commitment.
By the way, I dont think Nyam is as bad as you think, although he is not the scorer we need. I think Larry Eustacy was looking at Nyam for a reason, that guy has seen good talent over the years hasnt he?
I honestly don't know much about him. I haven't seen him and can't atest to his abilities. My problem with him is from what I have read he seems to be a raw "project" type player. We are losing our only legit scoring threat and thus far our only replacement is a guy who seems like he will not be able to make an offensive controbution for his first 2 seasons considering he isn't a scorer in highschool. He sounds alot like a Justin Ishamish type to me. An unquestioned athlete who will be lost playing college hoops his first couple of seasons. This is a guy I would LIKE to take a chance on if we had a team such as when we had both the Senior Q and the young gun Bhop on the team that we knew could carry the scoring load. If he is the best recruit we get from this class then all of the sudden Bamba and Morris (both promising as I have said many times before) will have no scoring next year heading into their Jr. year with next to nothing in the scoring department as well. That is scary to think we might waste the inside prescence that those guys might provide in upcoming years bc we weren't ablse to get talent in to compliment them.
What is the latest word on Coach Tubbs and the NCAA "meal deal" inquiry? I guess the speculation eventually died out on ponyfans.com, but was it ever confirmed, exactly, the nature of the alleged "violation" or "infraction" or in what direction this is going? I am of the opinion that it may not have anything to do with meals, but it may have something to do with a "booster" and the recruiting of a high school player. Anyone know the progress of this so-called investigation?
Maybe it's on hold until Copeland returns and cleans out his office? Watkins said he might be back in April and I would guess they would wrap this thing up. I don't know how long these things normally take. How long did the Georgia investigation take with their coach?
