Something tells me Watkins source's initials are J.T.
I also tend to think it is J.T. I don't know why he thinks he has a lot of local support. I mean, sure Blackistone wrote one article arguing for an extension. From Tubbs' perspective, I felt that was somewhat warranted because Bennett seems to get one after every sub-.500 year. But, when you are a coach at SMU, and the word "violations" become associated with you at OU and at SMU, you better become worried.
Maybe he will be joining Sampson at IU.

Get ready for this, folks, because it's coming:
Blackistone's hit piece calling SMU racist, etc, etc, etc. You know, just to really bury ANY chance of recruiting ANYBODY for the next 10 years or so.

Bet $10 Blackistone never makes that allegation.

With the violations, I doubt he will make a run at us. Everyone can understand how SMU has to be more careful about that can kind of thing.

Not being in the area, I have a lack of knowledge as to what is going on short of reading the paper online. I was wondering if all of this is tied in with the new AD arriving. Is it possible that he has a coach that he wants to bring in and all of this simply provides a easy excuse to get rid of Tubbs? Any thoughts?

I dont think so, this was going on way before. He would just get rid of him when he got here.

A couple of things. First, this is being handled real badly. Second, Tubbs might have committed a few minor infractions at SMU. Third, we know the OU program is being investigated for major violations during the period when Tubbs was an assistant there (possibly the NCAA might have told SMU internal investigators about some patterns of behavior who knows). Fourth, we have a new AD coming in who might want to put his stamp on the basketball program and does have some possible contacts. Fifth, if we hire a white coach, I agree Blackistone will be out with the hatchet faster than you can say discrimination. So, if I'm Orsini and Turner, I've got to have my eyes on a qualified African American coach to take over the job. Who is out there? Davis isn't hired yet. Mike Jarvis and Nolan Richardson have been doing penance for a few years and are "big names". There are lots of assistant coaches out there who might want to be promoted. The only point I have to make is that they better have their next coach picked and ready to be announced if Tubbs is axed. The timing on this is horrible with signing day 6 days away.

I imagine the maintenance crew will have the furniture out and cleaning the carpet in the head coach's office by Saturday morning. Let's face it... it's over. Once the term "buyout"/"settlement" is used in a news story that's about it. Time to have your ducks in a row on possible replacements. If somebody could set up a ponyfans.com poll, I'm sure we could have someone in here by Monday a.m.

If he gets fired, I think there will be more to it than is suggested in this article. The two items listed below, if true, suggest that Tubbs might be in over his head at the college level. These are about as basic a complicance with the rules as you can get. Setting the practice schedule and keeping accurate records of recruiting contacts within the rules should be a lay-up for a clean program.
"In addition, school officials said Tubbs conducted practice for more than the NCAA mandated 20 hours per week.
"Tubbs’ phone records are being investigated to determine if he called prospective recruits more than the NCAA allows."

On one hand, my gut tells me there must be more to this. The fact that we were hiring a Sampson assistant bothered me at the time. If you follow college basketball, its been known that KS is crooked for a long time. I just hoped JT was different - and hopefully he is.
On the other hand (my pessimistic one), I'm thinking the administration may see this as a way to get out of a "bad" hire without having to buyout his contract. Watkins article said his contract can be terminated without a buyout if there is proof of violations.

This school is snake bit. A voodo doctor has put a curse on our athletic department and turned it into three stooges re runs. Basketball has just taken a huge step backwards, and any of you Tubbs haters that are excited about a coaching search are just plain crazy.

Especially, since it could happen late in the game.

Once again, you ignored (or more likely, just missed) the point of the article and the ensuing discussion, choosing instead to stir the pot just to stir it. This is a whole lot bigger than whether someone missed too many shots or didn't get back on defense or made the wrong pass. Personally, I'm not convinced Coach Tubbs is a great coach -- hell of a nice man, but that doesn't make him a great coach. But what is being done to him (and somehow I believe the witch hunt is being fueled from outside the university) is just wrong. If he gets first for not winning enough games, or not recruiting well enough, etc., that's fine, I guess. But whoever is the driving force behind this soap-and-burger-gate should be ashamed.

Knowing Orsini's predilection for reclamation projects (O'Leary), I could see Nolan Richardson or Larry Eustaschy.
