Not to mention MD himself was also an AAU coach before he went to Kansas.

Hey, what were the published excuses the DISD coaches were giving for recruits not being delivered to SMU? Committment. Well that issue has been answered ( high profile coach, commitment to practise facility and Moody upgrades. )
So now all they have left is... you fired JT.
Well we will see how the scales balance between those two things.

I certainly don't discount the effect the "bad will" between SMU and the DISD coaches will have on the program, especially in the short term....but at the same time, I think some people here are putting far too much emphasis on it. We need a balance here.
You have to agree that Tubbs ability to get local recruits as promised was overstated and overly optimistic. It could have gotten better if he stuck around, who knows? you cannot say that as an absolute certainty.
So my take is...kids will do what they want to do and what they feel is best for them, whether SMU is in bed with the DISD coaches or not. I think Doherty will end up recruiting just fine in the DFW area and will recruit better nationally than any coach we have had in great while.
I think we put too much emphasis (and pressure) on Tubbs and his DISD connection, lets not make the same mistake and over emphasize this "rift". If SMU is the right choice for a DFW kid, he will come here. And I am willing to bet that Doherty is going to reach out to the community through meetings and clinics and win the locals over fairly quickly.

I must say, I am pleasantly suprised at the points made in this thread since lunch time. I think a lot of you guys are right on with your observations.

who overestimated and overstated it? Only the people with unrealistic perspectives from the beginning. I wont name names.

Let's play a game. Guess the author: I don't think Jimmy is God's gift to coaching, but I respectfully disagree. He is our man. Give him a relatively short contract and see what he can do. I guarantee you Jimmy as the head coach could recruit 3 times as well in Dallas than he could as an assistant. Bring Jimmy in here, and watch UT and others worry about their stranglehold on Dallas. Within one year, Jimmy would have a commitment that would knock your jock off. Matt Doherty and other pipe dreams aside, tell me what other assistant thats out there is gonna come in here and make a splash.
Need a hint? February 10, 2004, before Dement was fired.
Edit: This is the most ironic post in the history of this board as it says give Jimmy Tubbs a short contract and see what he can do and refers to Matt Doherty as a "pipedream."

Round Two:
He could concievably land two monster recruits in our backyard and take us to the promise land, ie Sweet 16. Dreaming? Youre damn right. Thats what this program needs, a dream.

And your point is what? I stand by those words. My belief that Tubbs could land some big fish was not shaken at all to this day. Its all about timing and opportunity when recruiting to a place like SMU. The right fit for a big fish had not occurred yet in Tubbs two years. Doesnt mean he wasnt making progress or that it couldnt be done. He was in on Arthur, Beal, Odufuwa and others. Keep digging up those old posts, I encourage you. At least I keep the same username on here and stand by my opinions.

Its damn ironic about Doherty. I thought Tubbs might get a blue chip faster, but why dont you post the multiple other places when I said it might take some time but "sooner or later" Tubbs would break through. You are being disingenous. I also stated many times from the beginning that Tubbs would not automatically get recruits, that circumstances were going to dictate. I also was fine with the short contract concept, who could imagine he would be allowed to finish the short contract for whatever reason I still dont know. Keep digging up those quotes.

You don't think you "overestimated and overstated" Tubbs' ability to get local recruits?
I am not going to say another word. Anybody that reads those posts knows I don't have to. The point is obvious.

The secret behind college basketball recruiting is at the club level anyway, most high school seasons are simply for show, it is the club events where most recruiting goes down. So, yeah the DISD is important but not essential.

yuk it up fryguy. You know as well as I do that I have been very consistent in what I have said and I never thought any coach was going to have a quick turnaround here. Doherty won't. Lets see the blue chips Doh gets right away. He's on the clock.
