When did SMU announce that? All the other assistants have had a press release. Is he an employee of SMU? What is your source for this information? Why is it not public?

I'm not saying it's wrong, but if it is true, this is another in a long line of PR gaffes at SMU. If you hire a recent ex-NBAer as an asst hoops coach, you publicize it. Come to think of it, now I suspect you are probably right, and SMU just laid an egg, as usual. And right about the time the new coach is trying to salvage something in recruiting.

This gentleman according to reports by Coach D was working out with the team recently that I believe is in violation of NCAA rules IF he was an employee of the Athletic Department. It is my impression, with no facts to back it up, that he has merely been spending time with the kids in no official capcity. Perhaps he will be a hire in the future but not at this time as I understand it. And hopefully not if it was a violation.

Yeah, but what if he is acting in the capacity of basketball strength and conditioning coach like the other guy says? Isn't that against the rules, if you are not really a coach? I mean can anybody go out and get their local NBA player and have him not be a coach and yet come in and strengthen and condition their players?

strength and conditioning coaches are able, under NCAAA rules, to work out athletes in the off season - coaches can't - "coach" Lynch is a volunteer coach so he is not on the payroll

True. In fact, Dallas has a higher average wind speed than Chicago. The difference is that the wind in Chicago comes off the lake, whips through downtown which makes it a cold humid miserable wind.

The "Windy City" refers to the corrupt politics.

SMU adds ex-A&M assistant to basketball staff

03:15 PM CDT on Monday, July 10, 2006
By KEITH WHITMIRE / The Dallas Morning News

Former Missouri and Texas A&M assistant Lance Irvin was named to Matt Doherty’s first men’s basketball staff at SMU. Irvin spent last season at Missouri under Quin Snyder and in 2003-04 was an assistant for Melvin Watkins at Texas A&M.

Irvin, from Chicago, has spent 13 years as a Division I assistant with stints at Illinois State, Iowa State, Loyola-Chicago and DePaul. He is the brother of Byron Irvin, who played at Arkansas and Missouri and in the NBA for Portland and Washington.

Irvin’s hiring leaves one more position to be filled on Doherty’s staff.

Then I guess he's not related to big Mike?

From Frontburner: (whatever that is worth)
http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/

Incoming SMU basketball coach Matt Doherty made his first hire today: Lance Irvin, who used to coach at Missouri and Texas A&M (though, presumably, not at the same time).

I asked my b-ball-knowing brother-in-law if he knew anything about Irvin. Here's what he said:

Yeah, I coached with him at A&M. He is great. I have seen him a couple times since he got hired. Dad and I had lunch with him 2 weekends ago. He will do a great job. Has really good ties with Chicago, and his dad works for Adidas. He will do good. Great person.

Adam McGill: Irvin is Coach D's second hire (after Lutz).

And RGV: you're right and wrong -- he's not related to ESPN's "Big Mike" Irvin .... but his dad's name IS Michael!
