I agree. We need to fire Kevin Bacon as our head recruiter and start going after the local talent again. The guys like Sasser, Davis, Ross, Hopkins, etc. are still coming out of our high schools and we need a new coach who can get them to start looking at SMU.
I'm not sure Jesus would be interested in our coaching job.

I was kidding. Your candidate is going to wait for a bigger/better job.

Doh gets his five years as he should. He came into a complete rebuilding job. Zero talent.
He will get his 5 years, get fired, and move on as an assistant coach in the NBA. This is his last head coaching job. Probably drift off into motivational speaking or something.
Unfortunate because he is really a good guy and a great face for the program.

LOL, Tom Izzo may be easier to get. Seriously, come up w/a real list of candidates, and we'll talk. Grant wouldn't even visit

Neither Tom nor Anthony will come here. Izzo can go just about anywhere he wants. He's a good x o guy but he's not always been the premier recruiter on his coaching staff. As for Anthony, he stepped into a much better position than Doh did and his statement about this situation from the link says a lot to me about whether he wants to build programs or just manage them.
"For me to leave [the University of Florida], it had to be something special. VCU has everything as a coach that you would look for in terms of being able to win championships."
I had been a Tarheel fan since the Rich Yonaker /Mike O'koren days. Doherty got left with the basics to start with at UNC when Coach Gut decided he'd had enough. I watched him beat a good Duke team with a less than stellar group of kids that Guthrie left behind. If Roy Williams had come to UNC the first time , I would have supported him then. But what you don't do, is decide to come when the team is telling the AD ( [deleted] Baddour ) what to do. What Roy did was to wait long enough for the talent level to come back to previous standards then came. I lost all respect for Roy then. I decided that even though there were things that Doherty could have done better or different at the time, I'd rather support a coach who is willing to question himself , seek improvements where necessary, and not be afraid to go into a job situation with a very long road ahead, than support a coach who made his decision the first time( staying at KU) , then later agreed to go to UNC when the players were running the show and the AD sides with them.
I have no doubt about Doherty being the right coach for SMU.
Can anyone say Jon who and Ike what?
Jon Killen and Ike Ofoegbu are great examples of a coach finding basic talent where other coaches failed to and developing it( even though it took some pains and there were a lot of posts on this board wondering what the heck Doherty was doing wasting time with those two).
Roy Williams got his butt handed to him by KU for the whole forty minutes and couldn't make an effective adjustment . He has no (Zero ) ability to make sound adjustments in late game situations. What Roy Williams is best at is, the "aw shucks -extremely likeable Mayberry persona " that fits in with the political and social requirements that UNC coaches must maintain.
Anyway - I digress. But when people post derisive comments about a coaches ability that is in direct disagreement with the points people such as bagice put forward. When the Associated Press ( Coach of the year ) say your a good coach. When you see results such as Ike and Jon and
when you have a coach that puts a game plan together that keeps your team in the game with Memphis( both last year and this year) til the last few minutes of the game, what else do you want ? I think those type of comments come with a bias of some kind.
At the very least we've got a coach that can recruit kids that can win championships and can coach a talented team "up" to beat better teams.

Except that he also seems to be able to coach kids down to lose to bad teams.

Doh,
Like most of us, u probably didn't think JJ would be coming here either.
Grant is just one example of many HC coaches that I posted a couple of weeks ago that are ready to move. Who knows were he will end up,
Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Georgia Tech, SMU?
I really like Barnes top assistant down @ UT, Russ Springmann.
http://www.texassports.com/sports/m-bas ... ell00.html
Top 20 High-Major assistants
1) Russell Springmann, Texas  He has worked his way up after starting at Mardela High near his home in Maryland. Springmann spent two years doing grunt work at Florida for Billy Donovan and then his first three seasons at Texas as an administrative assistant before Rick Barnes made him a full-time assistant seven years ago. He's the guy responsible for getting Kevin Durant and D.J. Augustin to Austin.
Key Recruits: Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin and Damion James.
Below are a few more guys I would take a look @.
Chris Lowery- HC, Southern Illinois
Brad Brownell- HC, Wright State
Gib Arnold- Asst. Coach USC

Unlikely he would be interested. He's so popular there they named the whole school after him.

Unfortunately, for every Jon Killen there's a Derrick Roberts who just disappeared under Doherty. Doherty obviously gets through to some players and gets the most out of them, but the rest of the team looks like zombies on the court. Duke would beg to disagree with you.

Sorry, but you are flat out wrong about D-Rob. Roberts never dissappeared under Doherty. Derrick's stats as a senior were 10/3/2, same as they were as a Soph, except for the fact that he improved his outside shooting greatly over that period. The reason he didn't grow into becoming a much better player, as we all expected, was his knee. After his Soph year his knee was shot, he missed time in his final 2 seasons at SMU, and never regained his explosiveness. Talk to D-Rob today and he will tell you his knee still bothers him a great deal.
You could make the case that Pearson regressed ever so slightly his Senior year, his only under Doherty, but that was more attributed to his being moved to more of a perimiter play as a result of Ike's emergance as our star post player.

If it wasn't for his knee, I really think Roberts could have been better. I really liked him. Appeared to be a tough kid.
