No, you're the man. ( you must have cut class the day they covered contractions) I know, this is America and you can spell words any way you want to. Even end a sentence with a preposition. Or post an incomplete sentence.
Re: Doh = BennettButler had a first round and a high second round NBA draftees in the last two years. No real talent ?
Re: Doh = BennettIf this coaching staff suffers a sub-.500 season, fails to produce .500 conference record and is excused in the first round of the CUSA tournament, does this coaching staff deserve another year?
This steward would have been here for six seasons, averaged 14 wins per season (85-105 currently), produced no conference championships and one postseason appearance -- which I was glad we went to. I don't want to hear about all of the hardships of getting kids into the school and Moody not being what it is and etc. This is a bottom line business and Doherty knows he probably has been here longer than he should have. I'm willing to let 2011-12 play out because he needs this season to sink or swim with the roster. So far, he's keeping his head above water. I don't want a War and Peace response. Yes or No is what I'm looking for. Last edited by Mitch McConnell on Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:44 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Re: Doh = Bennett
A whole lot more than SMU guys currently playing in the NBA. And I was talking about hawyward and Mack, not Howard who is playing in Europe I think.
Re: Doh = Bennettso TB in the same thread you say it's the players not the coaches, then w/ Butler you say they had no talent, then you say that Hayward was overrated, now he's a 10-12 year player in the league. As RGV said, two players (Hayward and Shelvin Mack) drafted at #9 one year and #34 the next-obviously had some talent. That said, I dont think there is any denying Stevens is one of the best coaches, period. After the rough starts and bad losses you cited, the system and coaching got them to back2back final fours.
We need players..well, in Cannen we have the highest rated (4 star) since 5 star bhop. We have in SWilliams a top 5 DFW player. Cotton was a solid three star. We need coaching, and like it or not there's a fair amount of responsibility designated for that position. Look at the Butler tree of coaching. Collier, Matta, Licklighter, Stevens. No one would deny "the Butler way" works, but when the w's didnt follow at Iowa, what happened to Licklighter? Matta got talent at Xavier and Ohio State..if he'd been 30 games below .500 after 6 years at either how do you think that wouldve worked out? Could he have used the "Thad isnt the one playing defense" reasoning? I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Doh = BennettI'm still trying to follow exactly where you're going TB. Don't believe the rating systems, so let's get some sleepers in here, ratings be damned, and Doh's the guy to mold them into what have you and have us compete in the BEast?
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Doh = BennettI would submit that Jalen and Manuel have higher ceilings than Rob..nothing against Rob but both of these guys can get their own shots, and by the time they are seniors will be doing so regularly.
I would also submit Frog is not our 2nd best player. Not a knock on Frog, just my opinion. Last season had 20 wins. Also had, what 15 losses. A good year by SMU standards, yes. A fun year, yes. Was it the high water mark for the Doh regime? Looking like it was. Someone else said Papa refused to lose, being a senior etc. Add to that the intangible contribution of Mangrum and there are two ingredients currently lacking. Do we overcome that by coaching up the ones we have? I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
Re: Doh = BennettTalking about matchups and who you'd put on kazemi...we played a zone most of the game vs rice did we not ?
Re: Doh = BennettI prefer to look @ the present state of SMU basketball. Papa is gone & we have no bruiser inside.
Who's responsibility is that? Poor job of recruiting PG's the last several years. Who does that fall on? If this team isn't that talented, who's responsibility is that? When the roster doesn't match the system, who's responsibility is that? Its time for a change. Thanks to Doh for doing a great job with Kileen, Ike, and Papa. 3 great success stories. Unfortunately, there's far too many failures. Look @ all the players in the last 6 years that have passed through the revolving door @ Moody. There have been some exciting times @ Moody. I've enjoyed beating Memphis for sure. The flip side is that there's been more really bad loses than really good wins in Doh's tenure. As I've said for the last 3 years, the W/L record speaks for itself. No Doh hate here. Like him personally. He's just not the man to lead SMU into the Big East IMO. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Re: Doh = Bennett
Hard to disagree w any of that ...
Re: Re: Re: Doh = Bennett
Enjoyed the CIT run. The wins you mentioned as well. Haven't enjoyed the losses to usc upstate, ark pine bluff, southern, Alabama st, Jackson st, etc etc. Also would like a win in the cusa tournament mixed in before we go to the big east
Re: Doh = BennettBickle is/are any or all of those teams more talented than SMU ?
Re: Doh = BennettI'd say hell no. So, assuming I'm correct, where does that leave the shortcoming?
