Honest Q, where do you get him being a high academics private school kind of guy? He went to Kenyon College, and had stops at California (PA), Dayton, Florida, Akron, Clemson, and has been the head man at VCU which is about a polar opposite of SMU as schools go, save for HBCs. Kenyon's the only private on there and he played there. I think he'd be a great hire, but we'd have to back up the truck to even get a look.
Just looking at his academic and overall background. Kenyon is an excellent private liberal arts college (I can relate to the rigors of this kind of school). From WIKI, "Smart's given name was bestowed in honor of the famous Zulu warrior. He graduated magna cum laude from Kenyon with a degree in History, researching and writing on issues related to race and the Great Migration his junior and senior years. Smart received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and earned a master's degree in social science at California University of Pennsylvania. Shaka Smart developed a love for quotations at Kenyon. Smart began writing down quotes into a digital document that is now over 110 pages long. Smart has been married to Maya Payne, a professional writer, since 2006. Their child, Zora Sanae Smart, was born on Sept. 25, 2011. Smart's half-brother is the writer and professor J.M. Tyree." I understand he has a 7 year contract at $1.2 a year. Do not know what the buy out is. He has turned down some high profile state school jobs. He just seems like a great fit for SMU.

He is the hot choice this year and will do better than us, i.e. Big Ten, etc. Also, Illinois recruits Chicago and nationally. As a result, he will also be too expensive. We will pay the new BB Coach more than DOH, but less than a big conference school can with their other sources of revenue, plus access to recruiting marquee talent. No contest, even with our BE invitation.

If you think Shaka Smart is coming to SMU, you've lost your [deleted] mind. He turned down NC State last year to stay at VCU.
Fran Fraschilla would be a eye-rolling hire. Fired at St. John's and New Mexico? No thanks

Last post kind of reminded me of Stanley from the office. If you think we can't get anyone mentioned here outside of coach K, you're dismissing the money factor. Some people can be had for a price. No one thought June Jones would come here, either. Some people also might see SMU as a better opportunity than others. Big city, talent-rich, moving to Big East. You think Smart wouldn't consider SMU for $3 mil a year? He'd be the king of Dallas if he pulled it off. Question is, how much do we have to spend? --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?gtwbyv

Isn't that what Stallion said about June Jones?

I don't care who SMU gets, as long as it's not DOH 2.0

I still have the feeling that with the state of our program and the money that we will have to offer, Jones from UNT is going to be the next coach. Who knows, maybe it would be a good hire, although it will leave everyone very underwhelmed.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

Orsini very quickly disabused me of that type of thinking with his last two hires.

No idea why that would be underwhelming. He's a top 2 or 3 candidate by my eyes. Can't go wrong w/johnny. Its about good smart hires, not winning press conferences or hiring names

Oh, I am with ya on that, I think he would be great hire as well, I just know the more casual SMU hoops fan thinks and/or hopes we are going to pay big bucks and get a splash hire. I am sure that not wanting a coach from UNT also plays into it.

LOL, let's not listen to those people...Hard not to love Benford's potential after watching Buzz's Marquette crew today. They are scary when clicking on all cyclinders

Name me two better coaches that we're actively pursuing? Jones is very very good.

Why is a big ten job beteer then SMU for the same money? At same money give me Dallas, perfect facilities, target rich recruiting environment and the big east all day long. Illionois is a dump.
