Yep. But you apparently don't believe what we have to say. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingBased on pages 14 and 37 of this Student Athlete document you are given money, stipend, to make up for food and on campus housing. Meaning you must relinquish some of your stipend to purchase a campus meal plan.
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/con ... thlete.pdf At least that is how I read it. I think there are only a few reasons to move off campus. One being the increased autonomy that comes with private off campus housing. Additionally to have and pocket cash. If there were no perceived benefit no one would do it much like no one would play college basketball, football, etc. I know that despite the increased responsibility it is always viewed, in my experience, as preferential to have your own place and money to choose. I think the problem being exhibited is that these players do not have the maturity to manage their limited finances. If food is the problem then here is a solution, all off campus athletes now have free food during all dining hours. With food, housing, education, and wellness covered what is the great injustice again?
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingYO!
Napier is probably exaggerating a bit; however, there were definitely nights towards the end of the month where finances (read: food) was scarce. For student-athletes living off-campus, the stipend is generally enough to cover food, rent, and utilities. Having a roommate definitely helps lower our expenses. And yes, most of my teammates received a pell grant AND clothing stipend worth roughly $2500 a semester. You would think that $1500 / month + a $4000 pell yearly is enough, even a dream for a college kid. It often does not for many of our student athletes. For many of them, that is the ONLY direct financial support they will receive. There are no other opportunities to receive compensation during the school year. That $4000 pell/clothing grant is supposed to cover all transportation, personal/incidental/cell phone, clothes, etc that a student will incur during the course of a year. If all goes well, a poor student-athlete may be able to pocket a few hundred bucks at the end of the year. A few car repairs, family needing money back home, etc and its a break-even / few hungry nights scenario. In the short run, NCAA needs to allow Colleges to fill the gap from Tuition/Board and Cost-Of-Attendance. In the even shorter run, I'm still waiting on $12 check from EA Sports. In the longer run, all hail our Union Overloads - providers of medical care for my big toe that hasn't been right since 2008.
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingI remember the in a 30/30 episode when they we talking about Miami they were saying the same thing about weekend meals for the players not being able to eat very well on the weekends. I think Mark Emmert said that they are going try to make changes.

Thanks for the insight. #HammerDown
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingyeah I don't mind discussing whether the amounts should be increased as long as the misinformation is corrected. I'm just saying that the NCAA is an easy whipping boy and the full story is rarely told so that a reasonable discussion can take place

Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingThat money sounds awesome to me. JK. Not awesome just more than I get.
You know what sort of healthcare I get for 6 years of Naval SpecOps and a permanent jaw, spine, and knee injuries (two of which I had invasive surgeries for)? About $258/month (I can also petition for higher up to $1500) but I wouldnt change any of that. You know how much an E1 in the military makes a month (no off base housing privileges) $1531. So I think we should keep these "shoulds" and fairness thoughts in perspective. I am not saying we shouldn't make changes I just think If you go play football and think that your body will be the same afterwards then you have some serious maturing to do. I think that more important changes should be made for student athletes to set them up for post playing career success after not making the NBA/NFL. Maybe specialty sports program degree(s) for athletes that focuses on more relevant courses to their unique perspective. A path to personal responsibility and wellness.
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingAnd then.....there are the the snacks. An OU friend of mine explained to me not too long ago that atheletes at OU have access to a "snack" budget. Completely paid for of course by tax dollars.
Re: Napier...goes to bed starving
Well apparently SMU does not have a snack budget. Killen did a good job of explaining what is going on here. And that was not second or third hand information. And apparently the NCAA president sees the need for change as well since he has indicated so recently. Last edited by Rebel10 on Tue Apr 08, 2014 8:59 am, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Napier...goes to bed starving
When I was a freshman (back in the stone age), the athletes ate in the McElvaney cafeteria. We had a buffet and they got double portions of anything they wanted. Since it was a buffet, that just saved them from having to get back in line again. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingI think we can all agree that it is a complex issue and like Stallion says, all the information needs to be disseminated. I agree that Killen did a good job laying it out for how it is as SMU.
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingThis is completely legit... Dining halls always stop serving dinner ridiculously early, like 7:30-8. For these athletes burning thousands of calories per day, they get hungry again after dinner, and there's no meal plan for late night snacks. It's not ridiculous to say that he goes to bed hungry
Re: Napier...goes to bed starvingManage your money, take food back to the room. I gained 75lbs during my time on the Hilltop. After the meals, money, and sports nutrition shakes/bars no one goes to bed hungry.
