Coaching Search Who Ya Want?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?Pitino would definitely be fun, but I think we'd have to anticipate it being a short stay... which is the exact situation we completely botched last time.
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?I just can't see RGT, allowing SMU to hire Patino. Little Ricky, doesn't have the power to fire Tiny Tim, it's gonna be up to the power brokers like Miller.
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?Hart has the power to fire Jank but not the money
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
yep- 100% correct!!!
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
...and he can re-open the million dollar saloon to get the recruits lap dances and have the NCAA give us a double dog program wide death penalty. No more sports at SMU. Yeah great idea.
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
I’d rather have three years of Pitino having us relevant than a lifetime of your boy Jank coaching SMU 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?lets forget this P5 business.
Once we are routinely competing for(and occaisionaly winning) conference titles IN THE CONFERENCE THAT WE ARE IN, then talk about other conferences. sheesh
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?If we are going the NBA route I’d be intrigued with Grant Hill.
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want? For those wanting Rick Pitino, we might get a Pitino, Richard who is flaming out this year at Minnesota, but he has a huge buyout and might come cheap. Same goes for Shaka Smart. His style of play fits mid-major programs and the types of players that are available to us. At UT where one and dones reside, they don't want to risk NBA life by pushing their limits which is what he requires.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
Interesting read - I did not realize he was on the hot seat there... https://herosports.com/college-basketball/richard-pitino-buyout-minnesota-candidates-ahah We should be Northwestern fans this evening and hope he becomes available. I would be all for lil' Rickey at SMU! And he could bring his 6' 10" 3 star Freshman from Dallas with him too - Sammy Freeman as well as his Frosh Guard from Dallas, Tre' Williams - an ESPN 4 star. (He also has a 4 star Freshman from Germany - 89 ranked prospect in 2019 on his MN roster - I know of another German who did pretty well playing basketball in Dallas) "Moral Victories Make Me Sick" - TR

Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want? What has Richard done to inspire you to think he would be able to get it done at SMU?
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
Didn't he win the NIT? An object at rest cannot be stopped!
Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
Let's see: Ricky Jr has landed two top 50s, a #62, and a top 100 national recruit in his last four classes and numerous top 200s to fill out the classes beating out Kansas, Xavier, Georgia Tech, Texas, Arizona, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and A&M for recruits. He may just be recruiting the DFW area better than we are and he lives in Minneapolis (see reference to two top Dallas recruits above). Non conference wins against the likes of Texas A&M, Utah, Washington, and Oklahoma State (2x), Clemson in last two years vs. what Jank has done with his OOC schedule. Numerous top 25 wins in last couple of years including #3 Ohio State and #19 Michigan this year. Swept #13 Purdue last year and beat a few other top 25s. 2nd Round of NCAA tournament last year. First round of NCAAs 3 years ago. 1 NIT Championship. Imagine what he could do in AAC vs the Big10 Schedule he currently has to deal with... "Moral Victories Make Me Sick" - TR

Re: Coaching Search Who Ya Want?
I thought we were aiming much higher than NIT appearances.
He has made the NCAA tournament twice in 7 seasons along with one NIT appearance. He has accumulated 3 losing seasons in that span. I think we need to aim higher. If not save our money and let Jankovich do that. After all he does have 1 NCAA tournament appearance in 3 seasons. A potential NIT appearance, and only one losing season in these four seasons. Give him an extra 3 seasons and he might make the NCAA tournament once and even with two additional losing seasons would match Richard Pitino's resume. Jankovich has earned his dismissal, but we need to go big, otherwise it's a waste of money.
