Just think about SMU basketball for a second. In one year, they've gone from 15-17 (5-11 in CUSA) to 16-4 (5-2) in the quasi Big East. I'm not exactly enlightened to all of the details of exactly how each player made his way to SMU, but suddenly we have one of the deepest and most athletic teams in the whole country. We are landing big time transfers, McDonald's All American recruits, etc. I think when you tread as heavily in the recruiting waters as SMU has had to do in the last year, it comes with the territory that things are going to get questioned.

I'm not here to launch accusations at Larry Brown or staff, but you have to be a special kind of naive to think that college basketball is super clean. Whether it's something relatively "harmless" like relaxing the academic standards for athletes or helping athletes get through it with extensive tutoring, etc. (SMU clearly does this), or something more serious like outright paying the players or maliciously changing highschool grades, this stuff happens.

I've read a little bit about the Brett Shipp investigation, and it appears to me like he attempted to contact the SMU basketball program a number of times as part of his investigation and they've stonewalled him, so he showed up at the press conference asking questions. It's exactly what he's supposed to do if he's doing his job.

I have no personal knowledge of the underlying facts of his report, but the allegations with regard to Frazier's grade changing is pretty specific on exactly what was done and why it shouldn't have been done, and he states that the details are coming directly from a DISD internal audit, not his own speculation.

I think you guys are off base and out of line for spewing hate at the reporter for the mere fact he is investigating your favorite team. It's that type of illogical homerism that allowed so many people to cover up the Sandusky situation at Penn State. As an SMU alum and someone who is an ardent supporter of the SMU basketball team, my response as a fan to this investigation is that I hope Frazier and SMU did nothing wrong. But if they did, they need to face the consequences. And same thing goes for Brett Shipp. If it turns out he's reporting at a way that's out of line, he deserves to face consequences too. I hope that nothing comes of this but, frankly, I think that the fans, supporters, and the program itself owes it to themselves to be upfront, responsible and cooperative. SMU always talks about holding itself to a higher standard and here's the perfect time to do just that.

Guy rapes children repeatedly over the course of decades = a high school maybe or maybe not changing a physics grade??? Yeah I guess that adds up...welll played.

Ur move SMU homers.

Now you are implying other stuff. Nic is here because Jank is here and LB knew Kennedy at Villanova. This is something that happened at Kimball not SMU. As Stallion stated we are more ticked off at how Shipp ambushed Brown. I have no problem with him doing the report just how he did it. So stop acting like a self righteous jerk. Here is the video.

Is this cheesed*ck serious?! SMU got good "overnight"?

Lets look at the transfers/recruits that are here. Nic Moore transferred bc his head coach at Illinois State came to SMU. Crandall Head knew Jerrance Howard from his days at Illinois. Markus Kennedy is here bc Jay Wright is good buddies with Larry Brown and Larry was able to watch Markus play/practice in person. Keith Frazier is at SMU bc he's from Dallas and wants to play for a HOF coach that can prepare him (hopefully) for the NBA. Sterling Brown and Ben Moore were Illinois guys brought in by Jerrance Howard. Nick Russell is a DFW native who was lost in the shufle at K-State. He was brought in under the Doh regime.

So while you say this happened "overnight", it actually was a process that goes back 3 years to Russell all the way up to now. There is no WTF transfer or signing. All of these kids had legitimate reasons to come to SMU. Your implication that something is wrong here and then to link it to Sandusky is beyond stupid. If you truly are a follower of SMU athletics and a graduate of SMU I would demand a refund. Clearly we failed you somewhere along the way.

Good post SMT. Also KF wanted to be near his son. And Shawn Williams is from Dallas and got lost in the shuffle at Texas so he transferred back home. Kennedy was not consider a superstar coming out of high school but lost 50 pounds while at SMU and is playing very good ball now.

Brett Shipp punted what was left of his journalistic integrity with his ridiculous report on the DISD superintendent last year. If you watched any of his mind numbing reports regarding Mike Miles, what he said last night wouldn't have surprised you. He has turned into Marvin Zindler......

First of all, I almost qualified the Sandusky comment because I feared that backlash, but I thought you guys were smarter than that. Guess not. I was clearly comparing the "circle the wagons" response to an investigation, not the actual situations. And you know that.

As for the recruiting situations, I said outright that I'm not blaming anyone of anything. SMU's turnaround has been about as overnight as you get in college basketball. What I said and I'll say again is that questions and investigations come with quick success because it's a known fact that college basketball is not clean. And the proper response is not to skewer the reporter (and me for that matter) for the mere fact you don't like what he's reporting about.

I subscribe to the old idea that a person or entity is innocent until proven guilty. And that no one -- supposed fans especially -- should jump to conclusions.

Exactly. SMU has certain standards for admission, and Kimball said Frazier met those standards.

If I'm a hotshot recruit, this story doesn't bother me or my family. I'm GLAD that SMU cares enough to follow up on my grades, whether I'll graduate, etc., instead of offering me a scholarship and then having to explain on signing day why they can't take me.

the issue right now is whether Keith Frazier is in the clear
