The fact of the matter is that unless other coaches view Tubbs as having been given a realistic chance at SMU, they won't apply and they won't come. We'll get the #3 assistant coach from Sewanee.

That's also been under Copeland's reign, Orsini might be a different story.

New A.D.'s have the right to bring in their own people.

Ruland went to Iona, so that's probably the only college job he's interested. Otherwise, he could go back to the NBA. Gonzalez is a hot property who will probably move to a much bigger school when he's ready to make a change.

He really wanted the Miami job, and now there are Seton Hall and N.C. State rumors. I admit he is a long shot, but would not have been two or three years ago. He really would be the dream candidate. Talk about someone who can recruit! I don't know why St. John's hired Roberts over him.

Some of you guys are crazy. Just decide whether you're for Tubbs or not. You redicule Friar for harping on Tubbs and then two posts later are talking about a replacement for him.
Maybe you guys have figured out finally that he's horrible and you just won't admit it? Because he is. Friar's right, the players don't like him and they talk to their buddies. You don't think that Hopkins has told any blue chipper that he knows that going to SMU was a mistake? I hate to say that, but in reality, it was. Tubbs doesn't treat people right. Not the players, not the assistants, nobody. Why do you think that the players were all wanting to transfer. And why were all of the coaches looking so hard for other jobs? It all spells one thing. Tubbs is in over his head.
Some of you need to take a side. Please get of the fence.

mean old Tubbs. He's mean to the players and the assistants, whah, whah, whah. Just shut up because you or people like you were saying the same exact thing about Dement and Shumate. Not to mention all of the posts and rumors about how mean Bennett and Cavan are/were. Its part of the spoiled brat syndrome around SMU. Its pitiful. Heres a newsflash for you people. When a team stinks and doesn't have the talent to compete at the level needed, people get frustrated. Players, coaches, fans, everybody. Honeymoons end very quickly at SMU, more quickly than most other places even though smu coaches need much more time to turn the messes they inherit around.

I hate to admit this after all of our acrimony, but I totally agree. We need a really tough coach who gets everythings out of his players. That way, even if we lack talent in the early years, we will be competitive. The lack of discipline always bothered me during the Dement years, and BHop was always allowed to do whatever he wanted. Thus, he never developed.

when I was at SMU there was grumbling that the players didn't like Ron Meyer or Bobby Collins. If you claim this is a reason that a coach should be terminated you really are showing some naivete about college athletics.

Amen Hoop. Not a big fan of Tubbs or his record, but the "mean" argument is ridiculous. Head coaches are not supposed to be the kid's buddy. That is what assistants are for. A good head coach is tough on his guys and then gives them respect when they earn it. Being tough is one quality that we need in a head coach.

I agree Hoop Fan. Bobby Knight has never won a "love contest" with his players, but they play and he gets good ones. Dean Smith was reputed to be one of the toughest coaches to play for, yet he got what he needed out of players to win. Coach K at Duke was an assistant under Knight, do you think he's not going to crack the whip when needed. Coach Laranaga at GMU, benched one of his best players for the first game of the NCAA tournament for bad behavior on the court. He was unanimously praised. If Tubbs did that we'd be on his butt and saying that he was stupid.

the GMU player punched an opponent in the groin he should have been suspended much longer than one game.

Rather than compare his style to the legends above, my question is this.
Given the players we have/will sign for next year, will we be a better team?
