Copeland pulled the trigger on that and we know all about the burgers and Tide accusations which were of the ticky tack variety (same as what got the Utah coach investigated by the NCAA). At that point, I think we had to overpay for a coach to come here. I am sure after the way Tubbs was treated, even a quality HS coach would have been loath to look at SMU.

Which is why anyone who suggests we should have fired Doherty after his third season is either incredibly ignorant of SMU basketball, or an idiot. There's a group of fans around these parts that live in fantasy land where apparently SMU can fire coaches whenever they want, for whatever reasons they want, and Bill Self will magically appear, offering to be SMU's next coach for 1.50$ a year.

Tulsa managed to find Bill Self - why couldn't we expect to do as well with a similar-calibre hire when that time comes?

I guess my use of humor went unnoticed. There are a collection of delusional fans who think that we can fire coaches whenever we want, for whatever reasons we want, and then expect the coach of the #2 school in the country to walk through the doors and offer to take the job for free. This is in connection to the belief by some that we should have fired Doherty after year three, which would have been 3 coaches in five years, two years before the timetable agreed upon by the AD/Coach/School, right after canning a black coach at a white-washed school for minor/made up infractions, make an already toxic position absolutely unattractive to any quality coaching candidate no matter how much money we threw at them.

Nowhere did I say that when the time comes SMU is incapable of finding a quality replacement.
