Given the players we have/will sign for next year, will we be a better team?

Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes losing a player like Hopkins leaves a big void. Sometimes teams actually improve because it forces other guys to step up and the offense functions better. What I look for is whether I am satisfied with Tubbs recruiting and in-game coaching. The answer to both is yes, so far. Bamba, Morris and Dez are solid initial pickups. Tubbs has been in on some blue chips and hasnt gotten one, but I believe he will if we support him instead of calling for his ouster every 10 seconds. As for coaching, I have seen several games where i thought tubbs made good adjustments and coached us up. The OU game was one where we came out from halftime, changed defenses and made a close game of it. The first round of the WAC tournament against Rice was also well coached where BHop scored no points yet we won anyway. Its way to early to give up on Tubbs and its just plain ignorant to do so. You cannot fire a second year coach no matter how impatient you are.

I don't think "mean" was my terminology. I said he doesn't treat people right. That's far different than mean. I agree a tough, disciplinarian is what we need. There's no doubt about that. That's why Dement wasn't successful (because he wasn't one). But there is a certain way to treat all people, and I don't think Tubbs knows what that is.

gimme a break. what is it then, he is too demanding? yells at people too much? God forbid, did he cuss? Makes people run? Doesn't coddle people? Runs off players? You must be Chris Reay's or Paulius Ritters dad or something.

Hoop, I really hope you aren't trying to point the finger at him for being more of a forgotten player apologist than you are a Tubbs apologist. Bc lord knows if anyone on this site was related to Jimmy it would certainly have to be you.

Here's my take on the subject: While I was still in undergrad last year I did in fact hear from players that a lot of the guys did not like playing for Tubbs. I also heard D-Rob was desperately searching for a transfer and as it was told to me by one of the other players was all but gone. So I can see where the theory that players don't like playing for him would carry some weight. Fact of the matter is though, if we were winning, no one would give a [deleted] less whether the players or staff liked Tubbs. The fact that we were so awful this season makes people search for another reason to dislike Tubbs. I don't dislike him bc people don't think he is nice, I dislike him bc in 2 seasons he has not shown to be a guy worthy of a D1A head coaching position.

Hoop, nothing would make me happier than for SMU to be in the tourney 2 years from now, extending Tubbs' contract and you making everyone on here, especially myself, eat crow for ever doubting him. I just don't know that I see that happening.

Not to pile on, but the word I heard from someone close to the program describing Tubbs was not "mean," but "crazy." But, hey, I never had a thing for Tubbs, and neither does this person, so take that for what it is worth.

whatever, I was an SMU fan well before Tubbs got here even as an assistant, and I'll be an SMU fan long after he is gone. I've told you before when you have ranted about this that Tubbs would barely know me if he saw me on the street. My opinions are based on my thinking, not a relationship with anybody. I will say I have a predisposition to give coaches at smu the benefit of the doubt for awhile, because for god sakes its SMU and coaches have a lot to overcome lately and generally get little support.

I would not give him an extension, nor would I fire him.

I suspect that represents the sentiment of 80%+ of the people on this board.

I also suspect if it was an either/or proposition, give him a 3-year extension or fire him, a slight majority would fire him.

If next year is a repeat of this year and more importantly, if next years’ recruiting class is a repeat of this years’ class, then all bets are off. Of course this is assuming the current recruiting class is a turd, and from everything I have read, all signs point to that.

Hoop, you agree with my ramblings?

I would agree that Tubbs has not earned a 3 year extension. However, since he got a 4 year deal to begin with when he should have gotten a 5, if this investigation turns out to be nothing, I think we should give him a one year extension. thats just a vote of confidence and show of good faith, not an extension really.
