Interesting that you read into my concerns that I don't want us to be BCS. I am in agreement. But, why is it important to marginalize any non-revenue sport more? Why so much angst, if I don't accept 100% how you view the world, i.e. defer anthing that might distract from FB and BB. Relax.

$20 MILLION Pledged for Moody Renovation

Postby NickSMU17 » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:49 pm

Easy up ECM. Water pony is a good board member and probably a good contributor to MC. He is free to donate wherever he wants and hopefully our advances in revenue sports will carry into non revenue.

I personally would like to see all our sports top 25, I.e stanford...

Agreed! Honestly, I may never go and watch a swim meet, but it doesn't mean I won't be cheering for them to do well. Plus, any time you can recruit top student athletes (in any sport) to become ambassadors for your school, it's a win.

Agreed, again.
I can honestly say that I have never been to one of our swim meets but I have always been a big follower of the team. For a lot of years they were one of the few bright spots in all of SMU sports. I agree that FB and BB should come first, but we need new facilities for the swim team. Hopefully there is something in the works for that as well.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

I agree that Moody needs renovation. Hell, I almost as old as Moody and I could use renovation as well. :) The swimming complex is an embarrassment to the university. It was once a major sport with multi-championships and it is indeed a shame that it has not received any attention in the last 40 years. However, if Turner and Orsini don't build an IPF as PROMISED to JJ then he will be gone and we can call both GT and SO the Herman Fraiser twins. I can't imagine remodeling Moody for 40 mil+ and not living up to the commitment to JJ to build an IPF.
Look at the money trail. FACT: more money is generated by fball. FACT: Ford attendence % wise is much greater than attendence at Moody. FACT: fball has been to two bowl games- bball has yet to make it to the NCAA tourney. FACT: in the last couple of years fball has had capacity crowds. bball can even get to above 50% capacity for tourney games ( which we bought into). FACT: bball had a new practice center built for them (Crum Center) yet fball still has to cancel practices due to bad weather. Put the money where it will generate the most revenue and not in Orsini's or Turner's pet projects.

Most exciting from start to finish sporting event I have ever attended was a dual swim meet between SMU and I believe Michigan (could be wrong with the team) circa 1970. I believe the opponent was ranked 2nd in the country at the time. SMU won the final relay by a fraction to win the meet. That was in the current Natatorium and it was pretty run down then.

Yes we need to upgrade Moody, get an IPF, and do whatever we need to put the spot light on the revenue sports. But I do hope a swim donor comes along soon. They need a new facility. Swimming over the years I would guess has been our most successful sport and we are letting it go by the wayside. All Americans and numerous SWC Championships along with high national rankings that were publicized in the day.

No reason not to want the best for all of our teams. I think even Waterpony understands the need for the revenue sports to expand their spotlight, but I do feel his pain in what we have let happen to a once proud program.

mrydel- Thanks for your insight. I was at SMU when we were perennial champions. We recruited swimmers from all over the world and Red Barr was an icon. Those days have long past since this admin no longer cares about non-rev sports. Please understand I am a fball proponent but feel that the other non-rev sports have been sorely ignored.

No question swimming needs an upgrade, but at this critical time swimming has no impact on any decision-making. I fully support swimming and all other sports at SMU, but I really think that we need to do everything possible to get football and basketball back in the national spotlight. Heck, my hope is to generate enough money to bring back track.

Here's the problem, Red. Donors get to decide where they want their money to go and in this case, the donor wants it going to Moody. End of story. As far as the IPF, have a little patience - good things are happening on that front.............

If you haven't been to a swim meet, you need to. They're a lot of fun. Those swimmers are serious athletes.

We were all afraid to associate with the swimmers. They were different types of animals. Often for amusement they had sword fights. Real sword fights with real swords in the dorm hallways. We FB players just stayed away from them for safety sake.

Chlorine makes your brain cells rot. Swimmers have great mindless parties though.

order is easy -

1)Moody
2) IPF
3) any other non rev facility that someone wants to daddy warbucks into relevance

If we get BCS then there is money to do 3, daddy warbucks or not.

No need to argue - it is not really debatable.
