Bickle doesn't seem to realize that hundreds of loyal SMU fans suffer the same disease every time they see the doh-doh bird coach another game. If he is still here next year they probably only need to print a few hundred tickets as nobody wants to watch this abortion of a program.

Really?? What is his record at SMU?? Definitely less than .500. And that is after he has had many years to recruit his own style of players for his type of offense. A winner is a person who finishes in the top of his conference and consistently gets to the big dance. Can you honestly say that doh-doh bird has done this at SMU?

Bickel= really? IIRC doh's admin. was cited for some violations by the ncaa? incorrect? I don't think so. Also, I despise doh because he totally screwed this university on his contract. I spent many many years in marketing and sales and was involved in many contracts that were much greater than his. My one guideline was that both parties had to feel that they had entered into a win-win situation. Tell me please? how many major universities gave their bball coach a 5-7 year contract with no performance criteria and standards for future employment? In short doh got by with murder and now by god he is going to pay for it.

Is that why they had 3,500 there last night? TBI is not a disease by the way. What is this about abortion? I am totally anti-abortion. You will see many fans in their seats if Doh stays. He is a winner! If they buy him out for $900,000 he will be on ESPN, with the Charlotte Bobcats, or coaching at a place like Saint. Bonaventure where they average over 5,000. He will have rock star status. Meanwhile back at Pony Land, we will pass on Bob Knight, Kevin O'Neil, Leonard Hamilton, Rick Mc, and John Thompson. All true basketball coaches who don't particular like the media or people in general. Go get Fran, he would be fun to watch. He can sell tickets, recruit players, and won't have to move. Good hire!

Kind of hard to buy someone out at $900,000 as you say, when DOH's contract is for $450,000 a year. Since he has 1 year left on the extension, that would be $450,000 SMU would have to pay out.

His assistants are guaranteed from what I hear, so it's definitely a lot closer to a million plus. That's before possibly buying some other coach out of their deal, and before paying them a competitive BE salary.

Post from Travis Bickle--If they fire him immediately, we could get our spokesperson Ira to coach. Can a guy coach without a college degree?Bickle, this uninformed attack was not necessary. If you were a true supporter of SMU basketball, you would not have made such an innane, insensitive and inaccurate post. You should issue an apology to Ira. Ira, thanks for being a great player, tremendous fan and advocate for SMU basketball. Go Mustangs!
Not innane, insensitive, and inaccurate as far as I know. If Ira ( team's appointed spokesperson) is such a great player CoxBizGrad, why don't you tell us why his number is not retired. That should pre-occupy your time and bring something positive to the board. Maybe something good will come out of this dialogue.
IT''s number is not retired because of some incredibly poor judgement on the part of decision makers. He averaged more rebounds per game than Koncak and more points per game than Koncak. The only players arguably more deserving are Jim Krebs and Gene Phillips. If Phillips had played in the 3 pt. era his numbers would have been through the roof (26 career ppg and SWC record of 51 pts against TX back in the day). He was absolutely deadly from either corner along the baseline.

Redpony, You are correct that the compliance office told the staff they could text parents and they got an minor NCAA Violation. That is somewhat different then flat out buying players, cheating on SAT test scores, and covering up a murder. If you spent many years in marketing and sales at SMU, you certainly did a horrible job. The attendance at sporting events reflect that. We all know about the win-win - learned that in 5th grade if not earlier. Lots of Universities I know of give their coach a 5-7 year contract especially when they inherit one that just got slapped by the NCAA. Rest in Peace JT. Yea, Doh will get paid and plenty of money either way, by golly.

It was a major violation actually but it was just about the smallest major violation possible.

bickle- first, I did not say that I ever worked for SMU in sales and marketing, nor did I imply that. I have never been employed by the university.

secondly, name 3 coaches that have gone to new schools in the last 8 years and that received a minimum of a 5 year contract with no performance criteria to maintain their jobs.

doh is a loser and needs to get out of here so we can move forward and hire a quality coach that can build a winning program.

redpony, no offense but that's most coaches in America. They all get a minimum 4 or 5 year deal, if not more these days. Only places they don't are at big schools w/a history of winning, if they hire from a lesser conference. Schools like SMU, who haven't been nationally competitive since '93, always get the hose.

Blockbuster hires like Turgeon from A&M to Maryland gets a 7 year guaranteed deal. There aren't out clauses for poor performance, just incentives missed.

Doh has to go, but people need to put the contract and the monetary implications in perspective.
