Their arrogance reminds me of the TCU fans. Wish I could buy them for what they are worth and sell them for what they think they are worth. I would be in the CofC myself.

Let me clarify the MU boards reactions

1) Anger - it's clear that if Buzz left for a sad sack of a program like SMU (clearly not the best career opportunity at this point of Buzz's career), it's clearly because there is a rift with the new administration

and before you get mad at me for calling SMU a "sad sck program" - yes we know SMU is moving to the BEast, has a ton of money and wants to commit to building a great program, it's just that Buzz now has the cache can get the same money at a already well-established program. Taking the SMU job is just not a career progression at this point in Buzz's career...

2) Disgust - that the new administration can not get it that Buzz has the potential to be MU's next Al McGuire

3) Disbelief - if the off-court incidents of last year and this year (if as serious as rumors position them) are causing the new admin to tighten the reigns on Buzz and Buzz does not care for it, then Buzz may not really be the person behind the words he speaks

4) Wonder - is Buzz leveraging SMU's interest in regaining some power back at MU with the new administration?

Now if Buzz were to leave for UCLA, Kentucky, UT or other major powerhouse programs, the tone would be much different - sad, but not the reactions seen now...

1) Why SMU is an easy answer that has nothing to do with MU?

SMU = Motivated buyer: While schools like Memphis don't see CUSA as "that bad", SMU suffered the triple death penalty in FB and BB. First, we got the DP from the NCAA, Then, our former President and AD imposed rules that made it impossible to compete. Finally, we got the boot from the sWc and ended up in exile with schools we don't consider our peers academically and/or athletically. Having seen the successes under JJones in FB, SMU is ready to step up our BB program. Having spent(or committed to spending) millions on the practice facilities and upgrading Moody, a few extra million for the best coach possible is not crazy. While it would be nice to go to the Final Four, we REALLY need him to build SMU into a consistent NCAA tournament team. If he is the best person to make that happen, we would be idiots to hold onto the money b/c we might save money with coach [insert name].

Established Programs = Skeptical Buyer: If you are UCLA/KY/UNC, etc, you can pretty much have any coach you want. To them, Williams' high salary AND huge buyout are a problem. As an AD at those programs, you might be betting your job if you convinced your alums to kick in $3m(ish) for the buyout and he didn't win the NCAA tournament quickly. Since there are many good coaches willing to take on their program, their is no reason to pay the huge buyout. Unless Williams was willing to pay for the buyout out of his salary, I think he would find it very hard to land one of those top jobs.

2) Disgust - we feel your pain. Every time I think of Kenneth Pye, I pull my hair out. Had he allowed us to rebuild after the DP, I firmly believe we would be in the Big 12 instead of Baylor.

3) Disbelief - If you don't like the people you are working for, it is time to get out. Even a great job can become a misery if you don't see eye to eye with the people in charge.

4) Wonder - who knows. Even if he isn't "playing" SMU to get leverage, deals aren't done until the contracts signed and checks start getting cashed.

If Buzz do accept the SMU job then we HAVE to go after a big name coach to keep Marquette somewhat relevant.

Not going to happen. This current administration does NOT want to pay Elite money for a Head BB coach. MU will become essentially SLU."

Guess he means they would become a "sad sack" program.

SLU had a heck of a season this year and will only get better under Majerus. Not sure if that's really the comparison they were trying to make

True, it's never fun to be on the losing side, and they will do the same thing we are doing and go after some other team's coveted coach. Maybe they will take away UNT's coach.

It is amazing how the tone changed from Buzz would NEVER talk to sad sack SMU to calling Buzz names. On the flip side, let us all have the opportunity to take a swing at JJ and we probably would.
It makes sense to me.
