I have no problem w/your take whatsoever. Becoming a dynamic national basketball brand/program and academia really don't walk hand in hand. Unfortunately, those are the barriers of entry. FWIW, those terms were almost directly quoted, from a text I received last night from our best basketball recruiting coordinator in the Doh era. A guy who turned down the A&M bench this spring/summer, and will be a head coach w/in 5-10 years. He was head of the Texas Coaches Association etc. Nobody knows about recruiting basketball players to SMU better than this person, not even stallion..lol So, we know what it takes. It's what we're willing to do. Make no bones about it, the Big East is going to mop us unless we make real improvements in these areas

Just to add some more backwards stuff.
Was also told we need an academic support center strictly for athletes, not all students. TOO crowded, not enough actual support staff for at risk athletes, which is every basketball player.
Also, need academic people to report to athletic director directly, not the academic vice president.

We have an academic support center strictly for athletes. This is a tremendous program. Dave Wollman, Assistant Athletic Director, manages this program and has seen tremendous success. I would strongly encourage any of you that are serious about SMU's student athletes to learn more about all of the great things Dave has accomplished with this. By the way, Dave reports directly to Orsini. And, finally, this was instituted with the help of several alumni, so I wouldn't be completely surprised if Stallion was involved in this process by at least being an outspoken and informed alumnus. But I like to picture stallion with a magic wand anyway.

In Conclusion, as usual Hoopmanx can't name a single basketball recruit today or in recent past that SMU offered but was denied admission despite being a full NCAA qualifier. He's been jacking with this board talking about recruits with dirty transcripts, degrees from diploma mills and criminal backgrounds.

Good stuff, not sure if the coach I referenced is too far removed to know this, although he only left 16 months ago. SOunds like a really positive step in the right direction. Truth be told, only info I get in these areas is from coaches, so it'll be tainted that way. I don't actually follow policy change, so don't claim to be an expert in that area. I just know what I'm told by those that recruit for us

I didn't think the NCAA allowed schools to offer athletes any additional help that wasn't also offered for every other student.

What are you even talking about at this point, Stallion? You have one realm of expertise and it doesn't even apply here. I've named tons of kids I was told we couldn't recruit for a variety of reasons, that have gone on to qualify, and play at our competition. Why would we offer kids I'm told we can't even recruit b/c of grades/transcripts? We liked Jherrod Stiiggers but his transcripts were awful, and now he's at Houston. Preston Purifoy wanted to commit to SMU, but we didn't take his verbal b/c of transcripts. He qualified and played at UAB last year. These aren't judgement calls while we wait on the clearinghouse. These are kids our coaches are told no effin way when they run it up a flagpole. Speaking of transfers, guess where Hank Thorns wanted to go? Guess where he ended up. You know why? Of course not I don't even know why you try, I bury you in these discussions, mostly b/c you don't know anything about the process you can't read in a book

With increased travel back east for weekday games, I hope we are increasing the number of tutors that can travel with the BB teams.............

I think the program is only about 18-24 months old.

I'm with you. SMU is a university not a circus. If there is no chance that a kid can't reach a level where they can graduate then don't take them. But if with tutoring that could change then we need to give them all we can.

Preston Purifoy had about a 3.4 GPA which means he could qualify with about a 500 SAT which many 4th graders could achieve. He was also Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year an award which is partly based on ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE and COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP. You sure you want to stick with that claim. This is at least the third time you have named a recruit andf mislead this board about SMU not being able to recruit a kid http://www.uabsports.com/sports/m-baskb ... 10aaa.htmlhttp://playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/[deleted] ... urifoy.pdf

In your own words from January of this year on a bbs forum "JJ Thompson & Stiggers aren't high level CUSA kids at all, ask any head or barbershop type in DFW. Those kids won't get you chips in college. We were happy you grabbed them, cause they weren't particularly coveted. Also, Stiggers has roughly a 1.4 gpa, so don't count that chicken, much like we are wary of Jones qualifying." That makes 4 misrepresentations at least. There is no way a kid could ever qualify with a 1.4 GPA without a doctored transcript and even if he pulled it to a 2.0 GPA he would need a relatively astronomic SAT/ACT to have a chance http://ncaabbs.com/archive/index.php/thread-477242.html

Bump.....Just watching Fabyon Harris for TAMU tonight....he would have been fun to watch at SMU IMHO.....he received a 19 on his ACT in the mail btw two days after SMU offered Jfrog. Would believe Fabyon could still be a great PG for Larry Brown.
