Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballThe only thing I'll give Hewitt is that he's a special special recruiter w/resources. He flailed at Ga Tech, but part of that stemmed from amassing to much talent, having them all declare early, and never having legit upperclassmen. To that end, he was his own worst enemy, cause team building never entered the equation, just sick talent. That said, if you can't win w/Gani Lawal & Derrick Favors as your front court, and Shumbert as your PG, you're doing something horribly wrong.
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballBruce Pearl. Won at Tulsa and would get people excited about SMU basketball
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketball
Pearl never coached at Tulsa. He coached at UW-Milwaukee and then Tennessee. He is not a fit because he has a cloud of investigation surrounding him.
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballDefinitely not Bruce Pearl
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballDwan- were you thinking of Buzz Peterson? He was at Tulsa before going to Tennessee.
I wouldn't want him either.
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballPearl is a 'with cause' coach or whatever that term is. I think that means there's like a five year ban on him or he would have to show the NCAA y he could even return. When you deceive the NCAA that's brutal.
My pick - Bring Theus in. Have Tark sit on the bench and El Sid play riverboat gambler with the AAU. Back up the truck. Let's go.
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballWould Scott Drew make the jump from the Big XII to the Big East? Probably not, but its intriguing to consider. He can recruit Dallas like no one I've ever seen. SMU could then be Dallas' team in a conference with a DC team, a Philly team, a NY team, a couple of New England teams. I doubt he'll leave Baylor because in the Big XII, he'll only have to succeed against UT, OU, KU and perhaps WVU. KSU/OSU occasionally do well. In the BE, well, its a meat grinder, year in, year out. The kind of conference where careers melt down. Would he like that challenge, that pressure? Probably not. I'd at least make a run at Drew, if for no other reason than to be turned down and show that we're serious. After that, Smart would be my choice, although getting him out of Richmond would be tough.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketbal
And there you go. If SMU had the sack, that's exactly what would happen. Instead even hewitt will say no and we'll wind up with pelphrey or something
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballIf you want a Drew, think Bryce Drew at Valpo, not Scott. Schedule Baylor in the OOC every year etc. Much easier to do than getting denied by Baylors head man. Like I want those putz's holding that over our head
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketball
Hoopmanx, what's the back story with Hurley and SO?
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballWhat about one of the coaches up in the A-10? Like VCU, Richmond, GWU. Do you think any of them would be interested in coming to SMU? Big East conference so they will still be playing games on the east coast and they have connections in that area as well?
GO MUSTANGS!
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballIsn't VCU in the CAA? GWU is having a pretty good year, but not great. Richmond has faded since their coach moved up the ladder. Shaka Smart at VCU would be a great get. Although if VT fires Greenberg, I suspect they'll be all over him like a drooling dog.

Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketball
Mooney is still there. They aren't shooting or playing defense nearly as well as they have in the past, though.
Re: Who is your realistic "dream" hire for SMU basketballRick Majerus? He's done a very nice job rebuilding SLU in the A-10.
