It's not out of the question if he wants to stay in the game...look at legend ex-Purdue coach Gene Keady, who is Steve Lavins's assistant at St Johns. LB has a lot to offer but maybe game day coaching pressures are not in the cards for him. He could be either position, but after listening to him maybe he is best served as an assistant head coach/consultant to Bedford.

We could have had Charles Manson as coach and had to give him the years we gave Doh. Had to after the Tubbs debacle.

If we had Charles Manson (of Manson family fame) as a coach, every team would have forfeited out of fear. We would be a killer team
It makes sense to me.

No, SMU had to do no such thing. SMU chose to keep Doherty.

Keeping one horrible coach for too long a time does not negate keeping another for too short.

If SMU had fired Doherty after his third or fourth season, then coaches still would have been interested in the job. Now, you would argue that a quality coach would interpret Doherty's firing as a sign that SMU demonstrates too little patience, when the truth is that coaches are routinely fired after fewer than six years. Doherty could have been fired years ago and no one would have thought twice. The record he compiled was ample evidence for his firing.

If anything, by keeping Doherty, SMU only made its program less attractive to potential coaches. Doherty has coached some of the worst teams in SMU history, and as a result the fan base has been decimated. No program would ever resign itself to such a fate for six years in order to counter a scandal with a previous coach.

Agreed. We really showed the works that we don't care about winning in basketball keeping the Dohsaster around so long.

After hearing Brown's comments, I think there are two possibilities:

1) We are gong to hire him as Director of Basketball Operations, and one of the other three as head coach. This means he can be around the players and coaches and run a program, but doesn't actually coach in the games, doesn't have to be against that pressure.

or

2) He is going to be head coach, but is sending a clear message to the folks interviewing for the HCIW position that they are going to be able to run the games... that HCIW isn't just a lame title, there is a lot of responsibility behind it.

Jesus Christ just say no to Buzz Peterson. What a worthless waste of time even considering him is. Scott Sutton, Flint, Jones, Jacobsen, Cross, Thompson, Dollar, Theus, Hewitt ALL aren't o.k. but this failure ex Big South head man is going to take names in the Big East? Someone had out the clown shoes for the circus.

Dan Wolken ‏ @DanWolken

Per @khairopoulos, SMU could hire Larry Brown with Buzz Peterson coming on as assistant/coach-in-waiting. Horrible idea on 2 levels now.
