The state of SMU sports

Has it ever been any worse to be a Mustang fan? Some brag that Football is improving to where we just may have cracked the Top 100. Basketball ---we are certainly not in the Top 100. We don't have a track team. We don't have a baseball team. Swimming is no longer a dominant power. Soccer can't get past the elite 8 although this is our brightest spot. How's golf? God- Is there anythin other than soccer that we can brag about? Please don't mention women's sports. I'm too depressed.

It was WORSE when SMU received the DP.
For me, that was the low point of being a Mustang.

Thanks, Cheesesteak, for adding a touch of realism to all this kneejerk reaction. I worry for PonyFans after our next loss, or at least our next lopsided loss. It will happen. So will some victories. Hopefully the kneejerk reactions to those will be as over-stated as these have been today.

Thanks, Cheesesteak, for bringing back bitter memories of soccer homecomings.

I don't think it was worse after the death penalty. At least we had hope that we would return to prominence (although the ridiculous self-imposed extra year killed that, in retrospect). At least at that point eveyone in america knew who SMU was, be it for the national championship that should have been or the negative that was the death penalty. Today I would bet that 99% of high school kids outside of Texas have never even heard of SMU. There's nothing worse than irrelevance.

I love it when people call it a knee jerk reaction. Were you there when Andre smacked 95 on us?? When was the last Basketball Conf. Title?? How about losing track?? We are so OK with getting the crap kicked out of us. Our expectations for our programs have dropped to somewhere between Oral Roberts and Harding. There was a time when like a "Stanford" we felt we could compete with anyone.

Knee Jerk? Yes- continual decline for 15 years is knee jerk. I should develop patience in my old age. The DP wasn't as bad as this. B'ball won the SWC in 93 ?, track was a contender. Even Football showed some promise. We can't compete in football or basketball with the TOP 75-100 in the USA. Look who is better than us now. It's disgusting.

I think it's calling Boiling Points. There is only so much crap we can take.
Scheduling OSU and Tech back to back was a mistake but year after year and blowout losses is a joke.
(Insert typical Stallion rant here)

By far, the lowest point was the breakup of the SWC and not being part of the Big 12

Hey, you had 14 years of decay to scrape away when Bennett arrived. Do you think it was going to be turned around in a day. Willingham certainly didn't turn around the most well known college football program in the Country in a day, did he? And look at them now, they are down to their third or fourth choice at this point. I think that basketball is just a matter of this team and these players. But we need to see if Tubbs lands a couple of big fish and the jury is out on that. I think CUSA will help us in recruiting in the long run.
