Moody Coliseum

Previously, some Ponyfans have indicated a preference for completely renovating Moody Coliseum (MC) while others favored demolishing the building and replacing it with a state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility.

SMU.edu recently posted an updated Master Plan Map (MPM). Using the MPM as a guide it appears that SMU still intends to renovate MC and construct new space (practice courts, meeting rooms, offices, etc.?) that will partially wrap around MC. Identical MC graphics (construction/renovation) were on the previous version of the MPM (2001-2002).

If SMU is genuinely showing its cards -renovate and construct new space - then MC (built in 1956) will endure.

Hopefully, a generous lead donor has already (privately) made a huge commitment

Also of interest - the Mrs. Baird’s property is included on the updated MPM.

Any idea if they intend to add Sky Boxes to Moody to help fund any renovations? If you could get a dozen $100,000 users that would be great. Add in some naming rights like Texas Instruments-Moody Coliseum (for $1 Million or so) and you've got a down payment on renovations.

Nope...let's draw the line here guys...selling "naming rights" is bull$**t. The next thing will be the Budwiser Dallas Hall. These are university facilities...not Dart buses. Or perhaps we will have EastStang-Delta's butt.

Come on PK, when you get right down to it we sold the naming rights for the football staduim to Gerald Ford. There's essentially no difference, as long as the money comes in.

Do we still have women's track?...(I have no idea) If not, why not get rid of the track and make the soccer field nicer. We have a top notch soccer program and not so top notch soccer facilities.

Actually there is a lot of difference. Traditionally university facilities have been named after the people who contributed the majority of the funds used for constructing the facility...their name on the facility is not a commercial advertisement, but an acknowledgement of their contribution. Personally, I don't want a Pluckers Chicken Wing Coliseum on the SMU campus.

As for improvements to the soccer facilities...I have not heard of any.

Yes we still have women's track and field teams...so the track stays.

Actually, that would be pretty funny. Plucker's Pavilion would be even better. Or how about Mrs. Baird's Barn? Kroger Koliseum might work. The Coke Center? Nah, unfortunate double entendre there.

Okay, then, somebody get on the horn to the Moody family and tell them to cough up the renovation money if they want to keep their name on the building.

Personally, although I appreciate the fact he donated the cash, it would've been more classy of Ford to insist they name it Doak Walker Stadium, rather than tooting his own horn.

Keep that in mind jt after you get your next 20 mil and donate it to build a new law school facility...you can have them name it after your favorite Dean, professor...or even Stallion.

Ah, yes, the Stallion Law and Recruiting Center. Real estate and Rivals all in one building.

Just so they don't follow the example of the Ravens and get a company to name their stadium who goes bankrupt. For awhile the only asset of PSI NET was the naming rights on the Raven's Stadium. But seriously, if someone donates a huge sum of money to renovate Moody (whether individual or corporate) and want it to be named after them, I have no problem with a hyphenation name. Hooters-Moody Coliseum (could you see that Owl on top of Moody). Virgin-Moody Coliseum. But with our luck it will be Saniflush-Moody Coliseum and they put a big toilet in front of the building.

How about: Dr. Pepper Dome? Southwest Air-ena? Campisi's Coliseum? Texas Instruments Technology Stadium? (nice abbreviation, will get the frat boys in the door) Perot Plaza? Halliburton Hall? Home Depot Hoop House? Come on, corporations, all it takes is money.
