Police say former Tech player to be arrested

Staff and Wire Reports

Texas Tech police said Thursday they are seeking an arrest warrant for former Red Raiders basketball player John Ofoegbu.

On Wednesday, police tried to arrest Ofoegbu on a charge of criminal trespass during a pickup basketball game at a Tech residence hall. After being handcuffed, Ofoegbu complained of chest pains and requested medical help.

He was taken to Lubbock's University Medical Center, where he was released Thursday.

Police said Ofoegbu was banned from going near campus residence halls as a result of criminal trespass charges filed Jan. 27 after he was seen running from Stangel residence hall, a women's dormitory. Later, witnesses identified Ofoegbu as having been in a Stangel shower room uninvited. A resident called police.

Ofoegbu signed an agreement with Tech officials, stipulating that he could stay in school and the charge against him would be dropped if he stayed away from all dormitories. Police said Wednesday's incident was a violation of the agreement.

Ofoegbu left the basketball team Feb. 2 to deal with "personal issues." Neither Ofoegbu nor his parents could be reached for comment.
