Anyone ever read this - sometimes amusing - http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/

GO, GO, GO MUSTANGS
"Goooo, red. Goooo, blue. Goooo, crimson?" True, last night's SMU-OU game wasn't pretty, but it was exciting nonetheless. If the Mustangs had even a halfway-decent night from the field, they coulda pulled off a major upset. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. But what struck me was the number of OU fans at the game. Published attendance was 6,857, and I estimated about 70 percent Oklahoma fans. My brother-in-law asked how many SMU alums live in Dallas. My guess is somewhere around 125,000, but that's probably way off. Granted, SMU athletics competes with the Mavs, Stars, Cowboys, Rangers, and FC Dallas, and the fans only like winners. But talented players want to go where the fans are. It's a chicken and egg thingy.

In related news, anyone else find it odd that the DMN editorial board made a bet with the LATimes? Doesn't the dog in that fight belong to the Austin-American Statesman? Is Dallas globbing on to UT's (ahem, debatable) chances of a national title because we've truly given up on SMU?

cont'd:SMU ALUMS

A data-tracking FrontBurnervian comes through with the number re: SMU alums:

There are (exactly) 35,164 SMU alumni living in Dallas. There are (exactly) 102,544 SMU alumni living anywhere. See, I told you I was way off.

I personally do not find this odd at all. I have no connection to UT but do support its athletic program when it does not conflict with SMU. As a multi generation Texan, for me it is a matter of state pride and I have no problem with two of the major newspapers in Texas and California making this wager. UT is not recognized on the national scene as an Austin team but as a team representing the entire great State of Texas.
OK you UT haters, flame away.

Right there with you mustangbill - I as the first person in 3 generations not to go to UT. As SMU never plays UT I can root for both teams.

With 35,000 Dallas area SMU alums and 100,000 Nationally, assume that 25% like sports. That's 9,500 people in Dallas, and 25,000 nationally. Kind of hard to fill as stadium with those numbers especially with sports competition from the Mavs, Stars, Cowboys and Rangers.

Let's assume that those 9500 bring their wives and 1.5 kids with them...now you are looking at 33,250 butts in the seats. :D If you're talking basketball, Moody won't hold that many. We should have such a problem.

Makes the paper seem like a UT newsletter.
