Sagarin says no March Madness for SMU

With the dismal performance against Tulane, we now rank # 163 in the Sagarin Hoop Rankings.

That puts us slightly ahead of... UTA (#164).

But we remain far behind #135, who is TX A&M- Corpus Christi.

What??? Enough excuses.

Do you feel those rankings are unjustified? I don't.

What about the ladies? I know it isn't the men's March Madness, but the ladies should be going to their respective tourny.

The men have to win CUSA tourney to get in....that is their only and I mean only chance...Unless they go undefeated the rest of the way.

if they go undefeated the rest of the way they would be the conference tourny champs......

The fact we are discussing this is comical...

Just not ready for prime time. I feel bad for BHop who will not sniff the post season during his SMU career. I doubt he considered that posibility when he signed on here.

I do feel as if Tubbs is building a better team (scoring balance, better defense and good role players) that will continue to be very competitive even without any one guy of BHop's caliber. The problem is that we will only have 5 guys (Fall, Morris, Pearson, Roberts and Willingham) talented enough to compete with post season caliber teams. Gotta find a couple of studs somewhere or at least go 10 deep with guys as talented as those mentioned above. What I see for next year is a pretty big drop off after that starting five...and that doesn't bode well for 2006-2007

Improved team or not, the reality of the matter is we'll be mediocre again next year. As I've said before, I don't see where the scoring is going to come from and nobody on this current squad can step up on a regular basis. Unless recruiting changes we aren't going to see the post season anytime soon.

its frustrating right now. There are 13 scholarships max. Of the 13, there are still 7 guys on our roster that are Dement's guys. Dements last few classes, while Tubbs was at OU, were not stellar. Roberts and Pearson do have some ability, but overall those last two classes were weak and everybody knew it. That is killing this team. 1 guy on the roster, Ofegbu, was a late pickup once Tubbs got hired. Not sure how much stock I put in that one. The other 5 guys were true Tubbs recruits. 3 of those look like real good pickups to me: Dez, Fall and Morris. 1 (Epps) looks like a bust at the moment and 1 (Williams) is TBD. Even so, it will be hard to argue with the Williams legacy signing. So right now, they might not be all-americans, but I like 80% of the guys Tubbs has recruited. Granted its early having only seen 5 recruits, but if that success rate continues, things will improve greatly down the road. And because it is so early in his tenure especially as it relates to turning over the roster, I think people should wait a little longer to start the negativity.

Hoop Fan: I agree the jury is still out on Coach Tubbs. The simple FACT is that SMU isn't likley to be signing any true impact guys who will be leaving early for the NBA (Darrell Arthur could choose to prove me wrong on that statement?), so we are going to have to wait until his 4th or 5th year at the helm to see whether he can improve on Dement's results. We've got some decent talent with those 5 guys I mentioned, but will they improve every year while in the SMU uniform? That's what I really didn't see enough of under Dement.

No dance this year unless we get white hot in the CUSA tourney and hope someone else upsets Memphis.
