Will we ever win a big game in any sport????

Postby nc pony » Thu Mar 09, 2006 2:47 pm

I am so sick of getting my hopes up for a new season of ANY sport at SMU since 1995 (when I came to school!). We have never even competed for a bowl in football or a NCAA bid in basketball in the last 10+ years. Losing by 20to UAB??? Where's the urgency to get better at anything??

I currently live in Wilmington , NC. I always talk about SMU, but the school here (UNC-WILM) has gone to the NCAA tourney 4 out of the last 7 years. And they don't even have a football program to generate revenue. And they play in a better conference than we do! As much as I love the school that I went to for undergrad and law, I am picking a new team to root for.

F--- SMU sports!! It's always the same!

it is frustrating, but UNC Wilmington does not play in a better conference than SMU. What kind of crack did you smoke on your lunch hour today?

Aren't you sick of always losing??

If you're not p'd off, then you don't care. The reason we continue to suck is b/c no one cares and they are used to losing, so it's no big deal. But when you are around teams that win big games (UNC, Duke, even UNC-Wilm), you startto look at your own school and say why have we been bad for so long??

and, football does not generate direct revenue. Only a half dozen or so D-1 football programs generate a profit from ticket, parking and concession sales. And these are programs with 100K+ stadiums that are sold out every game. Almost all D-1 football programs lose money if you don't count contributions and post season revenue.

I hate to say it, but if you look at the CAA conference (Colonial Ath.) from top to bottom compared to CUSA, it is better and they may get more bids than us. Yes, wehave Memphis and UAB, then what?? We get 2 bids max.

The CAA will have UNCW in, Hofstra in, and prob'ly G Mason as well.

hell yes I'm sick of it. I'm so damn sick of it i probably can't even express it. SMU competed pretty hard for awhile, but we were not nearly as good as UAB. Thats hard to accept sometimes, but as obvious as can be.

You're right, football doesn't generate direct revenue, but it is a recruiting tool for every other sport b/c it is really the face of your athletic program.

For a school like UNCW, they get no publicity unless they make the NCAA tourney in BBall, which they have. Recruits only recognize the school that way.

Why are we not as good as UAB? I just don't understand whythese sh--ty schools keep beating us and getting better at one sport or another, and we are happy w/ 5 and 6 seasons in football and a first round win over Rice ??

The new AD should focus on one sport, makeus competitive and dominate in that sport, and the others will get better. I'd rather have1 good program at SMU then 2 crappy ones.

There is no reason that we should not be as competitive as TCU in football!

For what it's worth, Sagarin ranks the CAA as the #11 conference, and CUSA as #17. Big Sky, Horizon League, Metro Atlantic and Mid-American conferences are all ranked ahead of ours.

But to answer the title of the thread, I think the win over TCU this year in FB was a pretty big win. But I understand what you're saying, and share your frustration.

Allow me to put on my sunshine glasses here, but that win over TCU in football last year was pretty damn big. Otherwise, you're right- big wins in football or basketball have been few and far between......and it is very frustrating.

You're right, that was the biggest win for us in the last 10+ years. But why should that be the case?? I guess my real question is, why should we be so happy to beat TCU? We are very similar schools, and yet they dominate in one sport? Why should they be so much better?? We have a better stadium, prettier girls, and Dallas vs. FW??C'mon!

I just want the newAD toturn just one sport around. And yes, I think FBALL is on the right track. But I hategetting my hopes up given our past record.

Nobody on this board is happy. Yes we're po'd but we've also been watching this team all year suck.

We are not as good b/c the SMU has not committed to winning. Yes, it sucks big time. We can't get the kids that would make us successful in any league, much less the crappy CUSA. Yes, bball would make the most sense and the fastest to success. Big game wins don't happen here. TCU was fun but that was a fluke IMO.

Sagarin or any rating means jack squat once you get past the top 40 or so. There is no friggin way the Big Sky is a more competitive league than CUSA.

You're right in a sense, but the selection committee uses those RPI rankings in deciding who's in.
