Derrick RobertsFour points?
1-of-3 shooting? Isn't he the best athlete on the team? As weird as it sounds, I hope he was under the weather. He's better than that. If UAB was doubling up on Hop and Dez, he has to score.
Re: Derrick Roberts
Frankly, DRob disappears like that quite often. Except yesterday when he had 8, count em, 8 turnovers. Love seeing snowmen in the turnover column. Hey, you cant blame any single one player, not DRob either. He is a sophomore and still has a chance to get better at least. The thing i worry about with him is his tendancy to fumble, bobble and kick the ball. If you dont have good hands, thats a hard thing to improve and impossible to teach.
He seems confused sometimes. Then he'll go for a dunk drive when he's 10 feet from the hoop. He doesn't move or position very well w/out the ball for his quickness. He just doesn't really know where his spot is on the floor. His open jumper shots are usually off the mark. For a 5A leading scorer you would expect more. I think he should try to be the slasher constantly flashing through the lane for a layup.
You're right. As a true freshman on a team with Hopkins, Castro, Simpson, Isham, etc., he didn't score 50 points a game. Stunning.
Look, he showed promise last year, and had several good games this year. He has great slashing ability, and he will be asked to score more. He can slash to the basket, and if he becomes more consistent with his outside jump shot, he will be a more consistent scorer. Kiper is right with both his concern about today's performance AND with his clarification that Roberts is far from the only culprit for the loss today. I'd say most of the blame falls on Squeaky Johnson and Marvett McDonald. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Also - his assist to turnover ratio was much be better. There is no question that he had a solid freshman season. He really didn't pick up where he left off; maybe he'll work on few things during the off season and come back strong during his junior season
Roberts will be a big key to next year's team as the heir apparent for the #2 guard spot. He had to play some 3 this year behind Pearson and when Pearson was tried at the 4 spot. For those who got to attend the games, was he lost at the 3? Does he belong at the 2 spot? Seems to me he's a guy that needs to be played at ONE position and needs to work hard to improve in that role.
Assuming Roberts is next year's #2, Dez runs the point, Pearson plays the 3, Morris the 4 and Bamba 5...with Killen backing up at point or #2 and Rack backing up at #4 or #5, we've got 7 returning players who can be counted on to contribute. The problem is we need to find 2-3 more players and need to figure out who the "go to" guys might be. Unless this group improves dramatically as a team, I sure don't see any difference makers and no new impact recruits coming in...don't even start with the Slim Shady comments.
Which of these guys can make a layup?
Slim Shady could be the go to guy! just kidding. I am curious to see how we do next year though because while we do bring back 7 players we do lose BHOP. It is always interesting to see after a senior leaves someone else steps up ala Matthews, Rich, Woods, Ross, Sasser, Hopkins I miss Troy Matthews.

All of those guys had been pretty good scorers before they had to step up....and don't forget to put Hancock into that mix! Roberts has not shown on a regular basis that he can score.
