Pony Recruit Named All Area

Postby mustangbill67 » Thu Mar 16, 2006 8:15 pm

SMU signee Jillian Samuels of Mesquite Horn, a 5-5 guard. was named to the DMN first team All-Area Girls Basketball. She lead the area in three pointers with 109 for the season. Another SMU signee, Delisha Wills a 5-10 F from Mesquite was named to the third team. Looks like Rhonda has a pipeline into the Mesquite schools. It was interesting that three of the five first team all area players are Texas signees.

Congratulations, Jillian and Delisha!

Anyone know how Samuels compares to Katy Cobb, who was terrific in the C-USA tournament?

I am glad at least one basketball coach at SMU can recruit local studs.
I miss Troy Matthews.

Jillian Samuels is a true point guard that can score. She has unlimited range, she can beat you off the dribble, she has one of the best crossovers you will see in the girls game, she has one of the best assist to turnover ratio in high school, and she plays bigger than her size. She has played against some of the best guards that are currently playing in college and more than held her own. She will be most effective in an uptempo style however is mature enough to run a team. Most have forgotten that Jillian led 4A in assist last year and was on that team that put this years state champions out of the tournament last year. At '5-5" she matched up most of the night with Niqky Hughes '5-11"and dropped 23 on her last year in the regional semis. I have watched both Delisha and Jillian grow up playing the game and I can tell you that they will make immediate positive impacts for the Lady Mustangs next year. I believe Cobb is a very good player who has one of the best mid range games in the league, she has gained confidence in her handles since running some backup point to Kendall, she needs to improve on putting it on the floor and extend her range. I think they will compliment each other very much next year and will make for a very formidable backcourt in C-USA.

Are you sure? They don't see most of the football players they rank. I expect they compile basketball rankings the same way they do football ranks: through a collaboration of reports from coaches (including the players' coaches and opposing coaches) and media who see them play.

No need to switch gears here! I too think Rhonda has done a nice job recruiting the local talent. She has a very talented class coming in next year and I think there will be some ups and downs early on because of the heavy dominance of under-classmen and lack of experience. Of course, that's what non-conference games are for. I do think the future is extremely bright for this program with the addition of yet another solid recruiting class.
