Browsing through the article on the new AD in the DMN, they had a blurb about the investigation of Tubbs that had more detail than I have yet to see in print:

4. NCAA investigation into men's basketball: SMU officials and the NCAA are looking into an allegation that men's basketball coach Jimmy Tubbs received money from Max Williams, the grandfather of one of the players, to buy lunch for two players.

Very strange in deed....I can't even begin to speculate about the motive here.

My question....Even if this ended up being true, not saying that it is, wouldn't this be considered VERY minor with no NCAA sanctions? Perhaps just a reprimand and maybe an internal fine?

This needs to be cleared up quickly so Tubbs can continue recruiting and we can raise the money for the practice facility.

I'm sure it will be cleared up. The only question is whether it was a knowing breach of the rules or an innocent mistake. And of course there are those rumors coming out of Oklahoma that could impact the views of the NCAA. From my standpoint its grandpa giving the coach $50 and saying take my boy and his roommate out to lunch on me. A violation, yes, but not very important. In the same ballpark as the Rick Majerus violations at Utah.

Thanks Max. Clearly he has a motive because his grandson wasn't getting to play this year. Just to show him who runs the team, Tubbs should bench him for all of next year as well.

Wasn't Williams on a med redshirt due to ankle surgery? Why would his grandad be mad at Tubbls not playing him if that is true?

To me there is something fishy about the whole thing, if it is really as minor as it sounds then why wasn't Copeland able to lay it to rest before he had to go in for surgery?

This investigation will obviously be a huge factor in the Tubbs situation.

I don't see why it should be in Copeland's hands whether or not to give Tubbs an extension. What is the rush and Corsini should be in charge of this.

Maybe so, but if it was something so minor as giving the coach 50 bucks to take his grandson to lunch, you would think they would have said, ok....that's all there is, pay a 100 dollar penalty or something and promise we won't do it again. The whole thing would have blown over in a matter of days. Here it is almost 3 months later, and they are still investigating. It just seems odd.

It does seem odd but maybe they had to wait for Copeland to get back on April 1 for the announcement.

Remember once there is an allegation, SMU needs to investigate the matter to death because after all we got the death penalty and we don't want to me accused of hiding anything. Its sort of like the serial killer who lives up the street from the axe murder. He's going to be the first person the cops talk to, and talk to, and talk to because they can't believe that he didn't do it. So, I'm sure that we're trying to be sure that there isn't something lurking out there that we don't know about. Also, remember that once you let the NCAA peek under your skirt, they're gonna want to take a good long voyeuristic look.

It appears that the Dallas Morning Booze (I mean Snews!) can't get their stories straight or they do a TERRIBLE job of editing or their reporters have been drinking heavily! They reported earlier that Max Williams had turned the program in for investigation because he did not like something that he had seen! The original story did not indicate that he was the one that was the subject of the investigation! You can check out the prior thread entitled DMN Investigation. Here is a copy of the original news story lifted from that thread:

UNIVERSITY PARK – Max Williams, a former SMU player, whose grandson, Matt, currently plays on the team, said he saw something he didn't like within the program and that he instigated the NCAA investigation into the men's basketball program.

Williams declined to reveal what it was that he didn't like.

According to multiple sources, a relative of one of the players has alleged that he gave coach Jimmy Tubbs money to pay for meals, which would be a NCAA violation.

The month-long investigation hasn't found any major rules violations, according to sources.

Sources said Tubbs used his own money to buyhamburgers for freshmen Bamba Fall and Brian Morris.

NCAA bylaw 16.11.1.5 states that an individual of a member institution can buy an occasional meal for a student athlete or an entire team.

Tubbs declined comment.

"It's just something that happened," Max Williams said. "I don't like it. I guess we'll find out everything soon. I've known Jimmy Tubbs for a long time and I like him."

Athletic director Jim Copeland is handling the investigation himself. Normally, the compliance office is contacted when a potential rule infraction has been committed.

Tubbs, players and several coaches have spoken to Copeland and NCAA investigators. SMU also hired an independent firm to help in the investigation.

Go take a cold shower Abe. And you know, I suspect there are some dirty little minds working as NCAA investigators. Remember these are guys who probably weren't good enough to be cops and FBI agents, or work for good law firms.
