Source: Missouri to hire UAB's Anderson per ESPN

Looks like the #2 program in C-USA will be looking for a new head coach.


Missouri is expected to choose UAB's Mike Anderson as its next men's basketball coach, possibly announcing it as early as Sunday, ESPN.com has learned.


The only holdup before making it official has been awaiting final Missouri presidential approval, a source close to the process told ESPN.com.


Anderson interviewed in Dallas for the position, according to multiple sources. Sources said Missouri was also attempting to talk to Creighton's Dana Altman this week. Missouri had sought permission to speak with Iowa's Steve Alford as well.


Anderson will replace Quin Snyder, who was forced out in February.


The hiring of Anderson ends an exhaustive search for the Tigers. Anderson would become the first African-American head coach in a major sport at Missouri.


Anderson has been atop Missouri's list from Day 1 with the hope that the Tigers could find a diverse candidate who would energize the fan base. Anderson brings a unique style to the Big 12, employing a pressing, trapping scheme with his team constantly moving at a frenetic pace. The Tigers were hoping to hire someone who could help fill the seats at Mizzou Arena with a winner, but also with a style of play that is entertaining.


Anderson, a former Arkansas assistant under Nolan Richardson, has been an instant hit at UAB. He coached the Blazers to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four years and racked up an 89-41 record.

This is a great coach who has been held back somewhat due to his inability to speak well in front of a crowd. He is a x's and o's man and a great motivator for his players. Some other schools have passed on him because he is not one to go to the local Rotary Club and build a fan base with inspiring speeches. He builds his fan base by winning games with an exciting style. Watch Missouri and see how far he goes with them.

Weren't Nolan and Anderson good friends, and don't they play a similar type of basketball? My only concern with hiring Nolan would be that he would alienate too many recruits, but I only know about him through rumor and story, most of which aren't too flattering.

Nolan is a cult figure. Hero to many, especially many young basketball prospects, and hated by just as many in administration. Anderson was an assistant under Richardson at Arkansas and was considered to replace Nolan but rejected due to the close ties. The chances of Nolan going to UAB may be very slim, but it is just the type of position he might consider. The team is built on his "strategery" (thanks W) and it would be a good arena in which for him to having his comng out party.

It was just announced that Missouri has fired the AD that hired Anderson. They will honor Anderson's contract. Sounds like there were some disagreements on which way to go in Missouri.

I believe Anderson used to be an assistant coach under Nolan. He was at several UAB games this year.
