After just two years at the helm, SMU will fire head coach Jimmy Tubbs, according to sources close to the situation.

Tubbs took over two years ago after spending 12 seasons as an assistant at the school and the previous two under Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma.
The Mustangs finished 14-14 in his first season and were 13-16 and 4-10 in conference play this past year.

The reason for the late timing on the decision was that SMU athletic director Jim Copeland was out on medical leave until Monday.

so this had nothing to do with the investigation and everything to do with Copeland being on leave. What in the hell?

Nothing I could find on Espn.com - this is about the only time SMU gets front page news on foxsports.com

This is wrong and Williams' Family is to blame

First off, I am outraged at what has acumulated for Tubbs over these past few months. Give the guy a break. Once we signed him to coach here, we praised the guy. We gave him our up most support to lead our team to victories.

You want to know what really bugs me about this situation is that a RICH WHITE man and his [deleted] little grandson can get away with almost anything.

If anyone wants to know the real reason why Tubbs is going to be gone is because of the Williams family. Max Williams, former SMU baller, has power and authority, not to mention money to have Tubbs fired.

You can blame this whole Tubbs investigation on Matt Williams, the so called savior to SMU basketball, atleast that is what he thinks of himself.
Just because you thing you are hot [deleted] right out of highschool does not mean that you are guarenteed to get a starting spot just because you were all state and dropped 60 something in one HS game.

I think its unusually to see how Money is power in this world.

Tubbs has not done anything wrong.
This came from DMN:

"Tubbs, according to sources, did buy hamburgers out of his own pocket for Brian Morris and Fall. NCAA rules stipulate that an infrequent meal is permissible."

Just because you do not like the coach and you were not going to play this year does not mean you are allowed to go run off and tell your grandpa that something "fishy" is going on in the program you play for.

In my opinion, Tubbs should stay one more year. How much is a burger really? Is it a buck or is it one mans Job/Life.

If anyone really cares about Tubbs and this matter then speak up, because its unfair for a man to go through this all because someone felt as if they got a bad start to their College Sports Career.

I agree with much of what you say, but is race really relevant here. A-holes come in all colors.

he's not saying its race, he's saying its nepotism and a [deleted] whiny grandfather and grandson who think they own the world. Thats sure as hell how it looks.

RACE?

Is race really a factor for what is going on?...

YES, when you have Matt Williams [deleted] about playing time because of his skin color...yes thats correct, complaining he does not have a fair shot because he is white and Tubbs is the coach.

Race is one of MANY deciding factors of this investigation.

Sure the race card does not have to be played but it is ALWAYS a factor.

This guys on the right track...Its not fair for Tubbs because he is not getting a fair shot. Max is pushing this to the limit where Tubbs gets fired and a new coach comes in. Max wants to see his "all-star" grandson on the court next year not on the pine riding it like a cowgirl he probably is.

I am not hating on Max or Matt Williams, Matt is a wonderful athlete who could have gone to better schools and hoop. I just do not think it is right for an athlete who feels as if he needs a new coach to spring his basketball stardom at SMU

Does anyone on this board really know the complete facts/truth regarding the Coach Tubbs situation? Probably not!

The truth (or most of it) will be revealed eventually.

The rampant criticism on Ponyfans is unfair to almost everyone in the story.

Did not realize that Matt was saying this was due to his skin color. By all means play all 52 cards.

Not "hating" on Matt, huh??????? Your paragraph right above that little nugget is just all love. Let me guess - you aren't a graduate of SMU are you????? If so, we need to tighten up admissions............

While I play my 52 cards Blunt, let me play the two jokers as well.

I never quoted Matt saying it was his skin color but what type of world do we live in...a racist world where if people feel they are discriminated against, it is always because of the color of their skin.

Lets stop playing the race card then

THE FACTS:

Tubbs buys food for two freshmen, Williams feels that it is the perfect time to have Tubbs go because of what he did for Bamba & Brian, Matt tells Max, Max tells AP and NCAA, NCAA investigates, finds almost nothing wrong, SMU wants more info because Max is pressuring them to do something right (ie: get new coach), Copeland is being pressured buy money and Max, Tubbs gone only after 2 of his four year contract, Matt happy.

Those are 68% of the main facts behind this investigation of Tubbs, not to mention the "illegal" recruiting calls he made and keeping the players longer than allowed, but what coaches dont do that.

All I am saying is Tubbs should be given a fair chance but that is not going to happen

If no one is quoting Matt as saying it was skin color, then where do you get off claiming that he said it just because there is Racism in the world?
