I think we should be right there making Davis an offer!

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Former Indiana coach Mike Davis interviewed with UAB officials for the vacant head coaching job, according to The Birmingham News.
Davis met for more than three hours at a hotel in Nashville on Tuesday with interim athletic director Richard Margison and two other UAB athletic officials, the newspaper reported Wednesday.

He is believed to be the front-runner for the job, which opened when Mike Anderson left to become coach at Missouri.

Anthony Grant, an associate head coach with NCAA champion Florida, is also believed to be one of the leading candidates.

The Associated Press left a message for Davis Wednesday on his cellphone. Grant declined comment on the UAB job.

Davis, 45, is a native of Fayette who played for Alabama. He led the Hoosiers to the 2002 national championship game just two seasons after being hired following the firing of Bob Knight.

The only Indiana coach to win 20 games in each of his first three seasons, he was 115-79 in six seasons.

Why would he choose SMU when he can go to UAB do whatever he wants and needs to do to be successful?

Hopefully Orsini would/should have that answer for Davis. Orsini is the new salesman of SMU athletics.

Orsini wont become AD here for 6 more weeks. Right now he doesnt have the power to sell anything. UAB will complete their coaching search a month before Orsini takes office here, Davis is their's if they want him.

That's what I really don't understand about all this, unless there is a huge violation why fire him now? The new AD can't hire anybody yet, and I don't really want the old AD hiring anybody when his last two bball hires apparently didn't pan out. If you wait until Orsini takes over, it gives Tubbs at least another year and then it would be more socially accpetable to fire him if you just didn't think he was going to be able to move the program forward.

Nothing prevents Orsini from making phone calls to prospective coaches. You can bet he is.

I do agree that the timing is very suspect. It all started with Copeland's resignation. This whole turnover in our athletic department has the signs of someone with money and influence pulling the strings. I know we are in serious need new basketball facilities and a winning program. I sure hope we have a plan to hire someone that can make a splash otherwise Turner is going to look like a fool.

Who knows...maybe some big alumn committed some serious resources if we got rid of Copeland and Tubbs...
