Rob Evans...

Postby BringBackThePonies03 » Mon Apr 10, 2006 7:54 pm

The great thing about Rob Evans is he has signed to high profile players from Dallas to come to his respected schools. Both of who are in the NBA (Ike Diogu and Ansu Sesay), he would be able to recruit real well here. It would have been interesting to see Mike Davis here, obviously it isn't going to happen but as far as Arthur goes I am sure that would have made a difference as he has mentioned in the past that he is a huge Davis fan. I hope we sign Evans, I heard Buzz Peterson as a candidate who are some other names in the running.

I remember when people (probably including myself) freaked out when Evans walked into Dallas and plucked Diogu from wherever he was (Garland maybe?) If nothing else, perhaps the man can recruit a little.

Buzz would not be a good candidate.

I've seen Evans and Buzz coach in person. We loved Evans at OSU when he worked for Eddie and was a solid recruiter.

I have never been sold on Buzz. When he had success at Tulsa, he was handed a team with talent and didn't bring any new talent in. When he bolted for Tennessee, he inheriteted a team with less talent and failed. Tulsa is also now in shambles partially because of Buzz's lack of recruiting and being there for only 10 months. (And John Phillips was a horrible college coach.)

Buzz left your program very quickly and thought he had the ticket to his future and has failed. John Phillips was awful and ran your program into the ground.

Rob Evans also recruited and signed Kimball’s George Odufuwa (class of 06). Not sure if Evans departure at ASU has had any influence on Odufuwa decision?

This is from The CollegeInsider.com's Coach Carousel

CI’s Angela Lento reports that Jimmy Tubbs is out at SMU, after just two seasons. According to Lento, SMU has bought out the remainder of his contract. She also reports that SMU would like to bring in former Arizona State head coach Rob Evans.

Rob Evans is probably the only realistic option that makes sense right now. Don't hire him because you expect him to get Odufuwa though. He would already have to sit out a year. Evans could probably begin to heal the wounds of the Tubbs situation as well as anybody. I sure hope smu fired tubbs for the right reasons, otherwise Evans might not come despite his relationship with Turner.

..having lived down here in the MidSouth for 10 years, basically in Ole [deleted] country, I just don't see Rob Evans as "the guy"....just a feeling, why fire Tubbs to hire Evans, they are basically the same guy...
