A bold idea for a new coachA coach with several NCAA titles. A coach who is a great recruiter. A coach who is a winner. A coach with great sideline abilities. A coach who is respected by all. A coach who couldn't resist the challenge of helping the SMU men's program. A coach who would be a bold move for our athletic department (or people would not be able to say anything bad because they would be laughing so hard). That coach is Pat Summit the women's coach at Tennessee. Now, tell us that SMU is biased!!!
So, did you get up this morning and start drinking right away? Or are you pulling an all nighter and haven't even hit the sack yet?
Either way, I'm impressed.
That'll help recruiting
"Remember Danny - Two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left."
If you want to go that route, SMU should consider former Fresno State Women's coach Stacy Johnson-Klein. She has "assets." ![]()
Summitt would be a truly gutsy hire, and she (obviously) is a sensational coach. I don't know how she'd fare on the recruiting trail, but you can't argue with her results. No university is gutsy enough to make that move yet, though. If we did, however, I'd be first in line for tickets at every game -- she's that good.
This is a great idea . . . if you want to shutter Moody within three years. I am not saying she can or can't coach. I am saying SMU would be the laughing stock of college athletics (moreso).
I wasn't thinking of Pat Summit in a hottie way. She's not what I would call my type. I was thinking that she was actually a pretty good coach with a lot of success. And how can someone scream SMU is biased if we become the first Division 1 program to hire to woman to coach men's basketball. The reason I thought of her was that I was reading the paper this morning and saw her name in the paper. She had shoulder surgery and is doing fine. I guess if it came down to hiring a 24 year old second chair assistant and Pat Summit, she would be the better hire without question and how could she not take the job. Every newspaper in the Country would be encouraging her to take the job.
The Beatles never played at Moody Coliseum. In their only Dallas concert date, they played at Memorial Auditorium in downtown Dallas. ![]() But you're right about the 'media doesn't cover SMU' angle...we'd have coverage EVERY game and the first game would be NATIONAL exposure!
so far, I agree with that. This is gonna be a tough hire. Orsini brings a different element, but last time we hired a coach just two years ago, the alternatives were not experienced coaches, they were the assistants at places like Mich State, Texas and Kansas. Is there any reason to think it will be much different this go around? In fact, with the cloud surrounding the firing of tubbs and violations, can we even do as well this time candidate wise?
I think you are right. I doubt she would consider any job except Tennessee to begin with, and even then I think she has said in the past that is not what she wants to do. She probably knows it would be a circus and recruiting would be a problem.
