How/Why did he go from ND and UNC to FAU? That seems like a bad sign...?

He's the essence of just being a 'name.' I'm not sure if this is the right move. His overall record is not that good.

Five years ago, he wasn't "a name," he was "THE NAME." I have some stuff up at the blog; I had to refresh my memory of most of it. Basically, he was an a-hole and admits he was unprepared at the time to coach under the pressure at UNC. His anger issues led to a player revolt, among other things.

The only question is whether you think he has learned from his past mistakes as he says he has. If you think he has, you probably won't find a better candidate. If you don't, then you should avoid him like the plague. Of course, only Doherty actually knows. Of course, the only person whose opinion actually matters is Orsini.

where are our resident Duke fans with comments regarding Doh Boy? Thats the not so affectionate nickname Doherty got while at UNC. I only have one prediction if Doh is named coach at SMU: he will have about as much success recruiting Dallas as Dement. Probably even worse because Doherty will be hard pressed to find an assistant like Tubbs. That is if he even knows to try to find an assistant with deep local connections.

It would seem that Orsini has probably had an eye on Doh as they have both been in Florida at the same time and the ACC at the same time i would guess.

no, I certainly do mean Dement. He had like 7 or 8 years to prove himself. Ya see, 2 years is not long enough to judge anybody, thus Tubbs grade will forever be incomplete as a head coach. Did a very admirable job as an assistant though getting more Dallas players than SMU has seen in any sport in years.

So hmmm. Lets see. Dement was seen as a dissappointment in the recruiting department in his tenure here yet Tubbs tenure recruiting as an assistant here was a time of "getting more Dallas players than SMU has seen in any sport in years." Hoop, you cannot label an assitant's tenure as succesfull in recruiting while labeling the head coach's very same tenure as a failure. Well, I guess you can, it just looks like a very strong contradiction. Which it is.

I was waiting for this

This is a big mistake. Very bad COACH. Decent recruiter, but everyone is at Carolina.

He would get us press, but after his 15 minutes of fame, that is all we would get. I was concerned that Orsini might contact him since they were both in FL.

ZERO ties to Texas. Might as well get Pete Gillen. At least he can actually coach. Poor guy is working for CSTV.

DBB

I am sick of being right. Hire Rob Evans.

When he had a little success at ND, he was tagged as one of THE hot young coaches in the country, until he jumped the tracks in Chapel Hill.
After all, what better source of accuracy is there than [deleted] Vitale screaming that "he's awesome, baby!"

Given his record, and with all the tools at ND & UNC, how the hell does he pull it off at SMU?

I say pass.

Doherty sucks, not too hard to recruit for Carolina. Roy did well with his recruits.

Next please.

Remember he took over a 14-15 team that finished 8th of 13 teams in the Big East when he went to ND and produced 22 wins the very next season (ND's first 20 win Bball season since the 80's).

FAU was 10-17 the season before Doh took over, failing to qualify for the Atlantic Sun Conference tourney yet finished this season with a winning record.

His first 2 seasons as head coach at these 2 schools resulted in I believe a cummulative 13 win improvement from the records of the season before he arrived. That is pretty impressive to me (even though I know at ND he did have Murphy and Humphry as sophmores I want to say). If anyone has more insight or first hand knowledge regarding Doh's coaching jobs I would love to hear about it. By the way, I decided not to include his UNC team bc he came into a pretty damn good situation that can't really be seen as a turnaround.

For the record, at this point I still like Evans and his assistants as the best route to go. Just think it is pretty neat that another established winner is interested in this job, which so many people claimed would be impossible to generate interest in.
