SMU on ESPN's PTI

Whoever thinks bringing in Doherty won't help with national recognition, they just commented that he interviewed with SMU on ESPN's PTI show. Wilbon said that we are " not much of a program " but Doherty is a great coach and could help us out.

I am sure Evans is a good coach, but he is not going to bring this kind of publicity.

I like the attention, my votes for Doherty.

There is no doubt that he brought in a great recruiting class at UNC for Roy Williams. Don't forget that Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants, Sean May. They were all his players, I guarantee you he learned a few things about being an in game coach in his years coaching. SMU could be the right fit for Doherty. He could make it happen here.

To add to this....

I had 2 fraternity brothers, both casual SMU Hoops fans and probably attend only 4-5 games a season, call me within 5 minutes of eachother asking if I knew that we were interviewing Doherty and it was on PTI. That is from 2 current seniors at SMU. If it is starting that much of a buzz just by his name being mentioned think if he even came here.

This coaching story is only in the national media at all because MD is a possible candidate. We really should hire this man.

You really need to find something better to do with your time. What is this, your 100th anti-MD post? Your biased opinion carries little weight on this topic anyway.

What is with the Doherty fascination? I want someone going up the ladder of success not down it.

do not take this as a damnation of Doherty because I do not believe in strictly looking at a won-loss record to evaluate the worth of a coach. However, how is it even possible to EVER go 8-20 at the University of North Carolina? How is that possible? I think North Carolina is the all time premier program in college basketball. Kentucky might have an argument and its close, but North Carolina is the gold standard and ultimate in basketball resources. Kansas is a legit third. Duke and UCLA are in there too but dont have the same level of support. Anyway, how do you go 8-20 at UNC? Dont tell me he was stuck with the last guys recruits either, because you all dismissed that with Tubbs in his two short years here.

Not only that, but the "last guy's recruits" at UNC are better than any one class at SMU ever. How did he go 8-20 mr. pony?

If I recall correctly, the explanation at the time was that in 2001, he lost nearly everybody to the draft or graduation, or in the case of Julius Peppers, to football. His predecessor Bill Guthridge could not recruit (a position that nearly everyone involved agrees with, btw). Finally, Doherty was playing a lot of the freshmen he recruited. Those would be the same players that revolted and got him fired.

Does that explain it? Sort of. Still, first time UNC missed the tournament in nearly thirty years.
