we get tagged w/ cheating b/c our coach gave detergent to a freshman and paid for a $8 dollar lunch.. MEANWHILE... in Norman, Ok.. this is going on

OU looks into Peterson's car: Oklahoma compliance officials spent five months examining whether star running back Adrian Peterson received special treatment while test driving a Lexus from a Norman-area car dealership.
After several weeks, Peterson returned the car and followed the guidelines laid out by the dealership. Associate athletic director Keith Gill said that OU found no possible NCAA violations in the arrangement.

The thing is, there is most likely going to be more serious charges in SMU's case - not just burgers and Cheer.

And ponder this: Does anyone doubt that Vince Young got similar vehicular treatment in Austin? But, that woudn't even be looked into by the DMN, much less published.

First, when are those "more serious charges" going to be made public?? And why not when he was fired? SMU really f'ed that up royally.

And second, since when is the newspaper's job to "look into" NCAA business?

Hell yeah, he drove around in a gold-plated Ferrari and the traffic lights changed when he approached. They did an article about this back in August. Where were you?

From the Jim Copeland article, here is the reasoning and timing of when the additional information is likely to be released.

Now, as he prepares to retire May 31, it almost seems appropriate that another bit of uncertainty at SMU has popped up. Men's basketball head coach Jimmy Tubbs was fired April 6 amid reports of NCAA violations. The Dallas Morning News reported the alleged violations included the purchase of hamburgers for players, providing small amounts of laundry detergent, and excessive practice time. SMU responded that Tubbs would not have been fired for those reasons and that more serious violations have been uncovered.

What were those more serious violations? And why won't the school report them now?

In a recent interview, Copeland did not disclose the additional violations, but did offer some explanation as to why SMU would not make them public at this time.

“One of the things we don't want to do is pre-empt the NCAA,” he said. “As they do their deliberations, there's a process there that takes a long time.”

“We don't want to speak out and pre-empt that process with too much detail,” Copeland said. “We can't do that. It would be unwise for us, as a school, to do that.

“We were very thorough with the investigation. Because we were comprehensive and because we were thorough, we ran across some things that we know; and there's no doubt about there being violations.

“Having the NCAA sit there, even though their report hasn't come out, we had a sense how they were responding to those things, as well.”

Right decision

Bottom line, Copeland is certain SMU did the right thing in firing Tubbs.

“In terms of process, I think we had every right to do what we did,” he said. “There was enough that came out of the investigation, … that we had reason to make that decision.”

Copeland said it may be later this summer before more information is forthcoming.

When is it the newspapers job to look into possible violations???

Please .... they do it whenever they feel like it, whenever it suits them!!

Are you kidding me??

No one - NO ONE at the DMN would lift a finger to investigate a charge that might blemish the Horns' championship.

Alright, since you seem to think SMU is handling this right, please name the last time a d-1 coach was fired and the reason for his firing not made public concurrently.

Oh, right, Mr. T-sipper.

While at UT, Vince Young drove a '76 Gremlin with manual door locks and a spiffy AM radio, which he paid for by sacking groceries at the HEB.
Is that it??

-He never got ANY special treatment - (except maybe for the limo to the Tonight Show during the Rose Bowl trip; the limo to his press conference in Austin announcing he was leaving school, etc.)

I loaned that car to Vince. No problem there. I am just glad to have it back now that he can hopefully afford his own in the future.

My comments about Vince relate directly to the story about Peterson at OU.

God you poor thing. In denial too. You are just too sad. Keep up your hopes though, SMU might get good again in something before you die.
