What happens if Doherty doesn't take the job? Will we have egg on our face again for leaking the story? Will Rob Evans tell us 'no thanks' for coming in second?
Relax, folks. Jobs are offered and turned down all the time. If a coach of Doherty's playing and coaching pedigree turns us down, we will not have egg on our collective face, and we'll move on to the next candidate. Besides, he has yet to turn down anything. All that has been said is that he has not yet accepted the job. Persumably, they still are negotiating the contract .... which could turn out to be a justifiable reason to turn it down if he doesn't think the specifics are what he's looking for. Maybe he'll want more money. Maybe he'll want an all-glass arena with a retractable roof .... in which case, the offer will be pulled. Let this process ride itself out.
are you kidding? If Doherty turns us down for a better job like NC State maybe. But if he turns us down to stay at FAU, that would be more than egg on our face. Surely we know that Doherty will take the job before we leaked this. We cant be that inept.
That's right. No egg on our face if he stays at FAU - doesn't mean we're "beneath" FAU; means he is being patient for an even better offerand that we haven't convinced him we're his best move right now.
you've convinced me. Now lets hope he stays at FAU. Evans is more of a proven program builder without the resources of UNC.
I don't understand this often repeated argument. Evans is the only coach since the DP except for Forrest Gregg who ever won anything as a Coach above the Pop Warner League. Again I'm not so much against Doherty as I just don't understand how you compare an experienced NCAA Coach with 2 BCS Conference Championships, 3 NCAA Tourney appearances and 3 NIT appearances to the usual SMU hire. What are you talking about. I think Doherty fits the bill of a young unproven coach more than Evans.
I feel like Evans just wants to ride into the sunset and retire here, no passion or energy(the guy is OLD!), and he is a friend of Turner so no real pressure. Doherty, on the other hand, wants to get back to a big program similar to what he hadat UNC. To do that, he HAS to win here, and I imagine he'll do whatever it takes. I like that!
I really would be a big fan of either hire really. I just think a lot of people are very excited about the possibility of Doherty coming here bc of his well known name etc. To be honest, its not very frequent that we have a lot of excitement around our football or bball programs so I think it is pretty awesome.
ncpony, that is my favorite point on the Doherty hire. He MUST win to move on. He will come in and he will succeed. His career depends on it. Regardless of who our coach is going to be, it sure would be great if we had a big group of fans to welcome him in at the press conference. I have never been to one before. Does anyone know where we would hold it etc or if it will even be open to fans?
Evans credentials are by far more impressive than any past coach we have had in a long time, that is why I said I would still be happy if Evans is our guy. And it is not like Doh has never been a head coach. We pretty much would have taken any of his seasons beside the terrible 2001-02 season.
For SMU Doh to me seems like a gamble because of his baggage that he brings from his UNC days. Since I have been a SMU fan we have never hired a coach that was a gamble to do baggage, sure we gambled in other ways but not because a smear on his record.
Thanks Mustang Icon. More to the point, SMU is a much better springboard to a bigger program than FAU, and I'm sure Doherty knows that. Big wins, such as Memphis or even UAB under Davis know, are more readily available in CUSA than Asun. Take us to the tourney, become a cinderella...if that happens in a few yrs, I have no problem with him jumping ship after he puts us on the map.
I know Evans is a quality guy with a great resume, but as far as generating excitement in our program, I just don't see it. Smu was on PTI just for interviewing Doh...imagine the media attn if he wins. A little baggage isn't always bad, b/c it puts the pressure on to win now, i.e Mike price, O'Leary, Calipari, heck, even Bill Parcells had baggage.
