Florida Atlantic and former North Carolina head coach Matt Doherty will become the next coach at SMU, according to sources close to the situation.
The 44-year-old Doherty, who spent just one season at Florida Atlantic and compiled a record of 15-13, will replace Billy Tubbs, who was fired after two seasons with the Mustangs.
Doherty also coached at North Carolina for three years and Notre Dame for one and has an overall coaching record of 90-71.
As a player, Doherty was a starter as a sophomore on North Carolina's national championship team that went 32-2.

good hire for you guys...hopefully with some recruiting and a few facility upgrades SMU can challenge for the conference title.
good luck.
Go Tigers!!!

Clown,
You're showing your true colors. Coach Tubbs is gone, but you cant let it go. In a post announcing our new coach you take another very unnecessary stab a good man who loved SMU as much as anyone. You're a classy guy.

Is SMU still a bottom 5% job? That sure sounded like a classy thing to say about our alma mater.
Tubbs tarnished the image of SMU and got a $600,000 buyout. Poor him.

You better believe SMU is still a bottom 5% job - no practice facility, a dated arena, no true commitment to winning, absolutely no fan base, zero interest from students, no positive community relations and nearly impossible transfer requirements……what job is more attractive than that?
This time next year when SMU finishes off another sub-par .500 season and Doherty starts realizing....this sucks.....this school has no idea how to run a competitive division I athletic program. Then you can come back on the board, with another new handle, and go on your next rant.

I like Orsini. He fired a lousy coach and is trying to make the program better. I think we should all be happy, it seems like you and your friends are the ones going on a rant.

fan n. (prob. short for fanatic) 1. an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport) usually as a spectator. 2. an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a pursuit).

For what it is worth, Fox Sports is still the only one I can find that is reporting this but at least they corrected it from Billy Tubbs to Jimmy Tubbs, so it is still an ongoing report.

From what I've been able to find out, the Fox report is premature. I'm being told that no agreement has been reached or accepted .... or, to be fair, rejected.

Enough said. I want it from the school or from a credible source, like ESPN or even a PonyFans.com writer.
I assume that means Fox heard a rumor, tried to confirm (at least I hope they tried) what they'd heard and then ran with a hunch. In this case, they guessed right. Then again, Fox also reported that LaMarcus Aldridge was going to stay in school next year, before reversing field on that one (and the speculation was out there that he'd jump for months).

When exactly did SMU post the job? I notice DMN says Orsini contends the position is still 'open,' and nothing's been finalized.
Maybe we're just waiting out the 30 days?

I only wish it meant that SMU had hired and fired Billy Tubbs in a span of three weeks.....think of the great quotes he could have provided!! And the Ticket would have eaten it up!
Oh well, another missed opportunity.....

Calvin Watkins reported that the 30-day period might be sidestepped (so the new coach can get on the recruiting trail, I assume), and reported that President Turner wants a new coach in place ASAP.
